Ridgewood NJ, When the sirens wail in Ridgewood, it’s the faces behind the helmets that make the difference. For this week’s #MeetTheMembersMonday, we’re sitting down with Shelby Taylor, a dedicated Firefighter and EMT with the Ridgewood Professional Firefighters FMBA Local 47.

Since joining Platoon A in 2017, Shelby has brought a unique blend of military discipline and community-focused compassion to the department.

From the Marine Corps to the Fire Service

Shelby’s journey to the fire service wasn’t accidental. Driven by the influence of her mother—who encouraged her to “prove the doubters wrong”—Shelby joined the U.S. Marine Corps straight out of high school. That foundation of service naturally paved the path to becoming one of Ridgewood’s first responders.

“What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.” — Dr. Jane Goodall

The Reality of Life on the Front Lines

Being a firefighter is more than just fighting fires; it’s about maintaining peak performance under extreme pressure. Shelby emphasizes a holistic approach to the job:

  • Physical Readiness: Consistent training and nutrition are non-negotiable.

  • Mental Sharpness: Prioritizing rest and hydration to stay focused during 24-hour shifts.

  • Perspective: “Life is short and unpredictable,” Shelby notes. “Emergencies can happen to anyone at any time, which reminds me to value every moment.”

Dispelling Firefighter Myths

Public perception can sometimes miss the mark. While firefighters might appear intense or overly direct, Shelby explains that this stems from the high-stakes nature of the work.

“Firefighters work long shifts with very little sleep,” she says. “That intensity comes from a place of focus. No matter what, our primary goal is always helping the people we serve.”

Life Outside the Station

When she isn’t on duty with Platoon A, Shelby stays grounded through simple pleasures. Whether it’s spending time with her family and pets, hiking, reading, or hitting the range, she finds balance in the great outdoors and physical activity.
