MAHWAH, NJ — In a county where winter weather can turn treacherous in an instant, Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco is ensuring first responders aren’t just brave—they’re better equipped than ever before.
Drawing on his nearly 50 years as a volunteer firefighter, Tedesco visited the Bergen County Public Safety Operations Center in Mahwah this week to personally deliver specialized Ice Rescue Equipment Kits to 10 local fire and rescue departments.
Why the Investment Matters: A Winter of Challenges
The initiative follows a notable spike in ice rescue incidents across Northern New Jersey this past winter. In these life-or-death scenarios, seconds count, and having the right thermal suits, sleds, and tethering systems can be the difference between a tragedy and a successful rescue.
“As a volunteer firefighter for five decades, I understand firsthand the importance of equipping our first responders with the tools they need to respond quickly and safely,” said Executive Tedesco.
Training the Next Generation of Technicians
Equipment is only half the battle. To ensure these kits are used effectively, the County recently completed a rigorous Ice Rescue Course.
-
33 Students Trained: Local responders completed the program.
-
National Standards: The training meets the strict National Fire Protection Standard (NFPA) for Ice Rescue Technicians.
-
Network Strength: This adds dozens of certified experts to the Bergen County emergency response grid.
Why Bergen County Stays Safe
This proactive approach by the Bergen County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) is a major reason why the region consistently ranks as one of the safest in the nation. By combining high-tech gear with elite-level training, the County is building a resilient safety net for residents and responders alike.
We owe a debt of gratitude to the OEM leadership and the selfless first responders who continue to serve our communities in the harshest conditions.
