NEW YORK — LaGuardia Airport (LGA) is reeling from its first fatal aviation accident in over three decades. Late Sunday night, an arriving Air Canada Flight 8646 collided with a Port Authority rescue vehicle on the runway, leaving two pilots dead and over 40 people injured.

As the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) begins a massive recovery operation, travelers are being warned of significant disruptions at one of the nation’s busiest travel hubs.

The Incident: A “Perfect Storm” of Factors

At approximately 11:37 p.m. ET on Sunday, the Air Canada flight from Montreal was touching down in conditions described by FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford as featuring “rain, mist, and reduced visibility.”

At the same time, Port Authority rescue trucks were responding to a separate incident involving a United Airlines flight that had reported a burning smell. Audio from LiveATC.net reveals a harrowing moment in the control tower. A controller is heard clearing a rescue vehicle—Truck 1—to cross the runway, only to scream “Stop, Truck 1, stop!” seconds later.

Key Fact: This marks the first fatal crash at LaGuardia Airport since 1992.

Fatalities and Casualties

The collision claimed the lives of both pilots aboard the Air Canada aircraft. Their names have not yet been released. Among the 72 passengers and 4 crew members:

  • Over 40 injuries were reported, some critical.

  • Two Port Authority employees, Sgt. Michael Orsillo and Officer Adrian Baez, were injured when their vehicle was struck.

  • Most of the hospitalized passengers were treated and released by Monday afternoon.

NTSB Investigation Faces “Extensive” Debris

NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy arrived on the scene Monday, describing a “tremendous amount of debris” scattered across the airfield. However, the investigation has faced unusual hurdles due to the ongoing partial federal government shutdown.

Homendy noted that some investigators were delayed for hours in TSA lines, highlighting the “ecosystem under stress” that Governor Kathy Hochul referenced in a Monday press conference. To secure critical evidence, investigators had to cut a hole in the aircraft’s roof to retrieve the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder.

Travel Impact: What to Expect at LGA

While LaGuardia officially reopened at 5:30 a.m. Monday, the airport is far from “business as usual.”

  • Delays: With a major investigation ongoing and debris being processed, flight schedules remain volatile.

  • Staffing Shortages: The five-week government shutdown has led to TSA staffing shortages and the deployment of ICE agents to assist at major hubs like JFK and LGA.

  • Expert Advice: Travelers are urged to check their flight status directly with airlines before heading to the airport.

The Path Forward

U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani have promised a “full and transparent” investigation. While preliminary findings from the black boxes may be available soon, a final report on the cause of the collision could take up to a year.
