Washington DC, In a dramatic display of maritime enforcement, the U.S. Navy intercepted a sanctioned merchant vessel in the Arabian Sea today, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing blockade against Iranian energy exports.

The M/V Sevan, identified as part of a clandestine “shadow fleet,” is now being escorted back to Iranian waters under the watchful eye of a U.S. guided-missile destroyer.

The Interception: USS Pinckney Takes Action

The operation unfolded early this morning when a U.S. Navy helicopter, launched from the USS Pinckney (DDG 91), intercepted the Sevan as it attempted to navigate the Arabian Sea. Following the aerial intercept, the merchant vessel began complying with military orders and is currently being turned back toward Iran.

This move follows a major crackdown by the U.S. Department of the Treasury, which sanctioned the M/V Sevan yesterday as part of a group of 19 “shadow fleet” vessels.

Cracking the “Shadow Fleet”

The “shadow fleet” refers to a network of aging, often under-insured tankers used to bypass international sanctions. According to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), these vessels are instrumental in transporting billions of dollars worth of Iranian energy products, including:

  • Crude Oil

  • Propane

  • Butane

  • Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)

By targeting these ships, the U.S. aims to choke off the revenue streams that fund Iranian regional activities and foreign proxy networks.

A Tightening Blockade

The interception of the M/V Sevan is part of a broader, aggressive strategy to enforce U.S. sanctions and maintain a strict blockade on Iranian ports. The figures speak to the intensity of the current mission:

  • Total Redirected Vessels: 37 ships have been turned back since the start of the blockade.

  • Sanctioned Yesterday: 19 specific vessels added to the Treasury’s high-priority list.

  • Primary Enforcer: U.S. Central Command and the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet.

“U.S. forces continue to fully implement the blockade against ships entering or departing Iranian ports,” a CENTCOM spokesperson stated.
