Hackensack NJ, A multi-month investigation into the Hackensack Police Department has resulted in the arrest of an officer accused of forging military documents to collect thousands of dollars in unearned pay.

Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced the arrest of 31-year-old Forrod Bonsu on Wednesday, April 29, 2026. The charges follow a collaborative investigation by the Prosecutor’s Office Confidential Investigations Unit and the Hackensack Police Department’s Professional Standards Unit.

The Investigation: A 4-Year Paper Trail

The investigation began in February 2026 after authorities received a tip regarding the authenticity of military records submitted to the City of Hackensack.

Detectives allege that between July 28, 2021, and December 7, 2025, Bonsu—who served as a Hackensack Police Officer—provided falsified United States Marine Corps records to his employers. These documents were allegedly used to secure paid military leave.

The Financial Impact: According to the Prosecutor’s Office, the falsified records allowed Bonsu to obtain $18,689.59 in paid leave from the police department for military service that authorities say never occurred.

Formal Charges and Legal Consequences

As a result of the nearly three-month probe, Bonsu has been hit with several criminal charges:

  • Third-Degree Theft by Unlawful Taking: Relating to the $18,689 in city funds.

  • Fourth-Degree Forgery: Relating to the alteration or creation of fake Marine Corps documents.

  • Fourth-Degree Falsifying Records: Relating to the submission of fraudulent data to a government entity.

Following his arrest on April 29, Bonsu was released pending his first appearance in court.

A Commitment to Professional Standards

Hackensack Police Chief Michael Antista and Prosecutor Mark Musella emphasized that the arrest was made possible through the cooperation of the local police department’s internal affairs division.

“These charges are merely accusations,” Prosecutor Musella reminded the public. “The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.”

The Hackensack Police Department continues to work with the Confidential Investigations Unit to ensure the integrity of the force remains intact.
