Bottled Water at Village Hall? The Surprising Truth Behind Ridgewood’s Water Quality Debate

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, It’s the question sparking heated debates in coffee shops and on Facebook groups across the Village: Why is Ridgewood Village Hall stocking up on bottled water, and exactly how much is it costing taxpayers?

As residents deal with rising utility rates and ongoing water quality notices, the sight of plastic bottles in municipal offices has become a flashpoint for frustration. We’re diving into the numbers and the science to see what’s really going on with our taps.

The Big Question: What’s the Annual Bill for Bottled Water?

While the exact line item for “bottled water” can be tucked away in general office supply budgets, concerned residents are digging for answers. In a village that manages its own massive utility—Ridgewood Water—the optics of municipal employees opting for bottled over tap are, at best, confusing.

Public records and local budget discussions suggest that thousands are spent annually on water delivery services for municipal buildings. For a Village currently investing millions into state-of-the-art filtration, critics argue that the leadership should “drink what they sew.”

What’s Wrong with Ridgewood Water?

If you’ve checked your mail recently, you’ve likely seen the official notices. The primary concern isn’t about clarity or taste—it’s about PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), often called “forever chemicals.”

The Current Status (May 2026):

  • The Violation: As of the latest April 2026 reports, several points of entry in the Ridgewood Water system still exceed the New Jersey Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) for PFOA and PFOS.

  • The Health Advisory: The NJDEP suggests that pregnant women, nursing mothers, and those considering pregnancy may want to use bottled water for drinking and cooking until levels are reduced.

  • The Progress: The Village is currently in the middle of a massive $100 million+ infrastructure project. By the end of 2026, 11 of the 12 planned PFAS treatment facilities are expected to be online, which will bring levels down to “undetectable.”

A “Tone Deaf” Expense?

The skepticism from parents and residents stems from a perceived double standard. If the water is safe enough for the public to pay rising rates for, why isn’t it the primary source at Village Hall?

While the Village argues that bottled water is a standard office amenity provided for employees and public meetings, the timing—amidst a major water quality overhaul—has left a bitter taste in the mouths of many taxpayers.

The Bottom Line

Ridgewood is on the home stretch of becoming one of the most advanced water systems in the state, but until those final filters are active, the “bottled water at Hall” debate isn’t going anywhere.

Is it a necessary health precaution for staff, or a wasteful expense that shows a lack of faith in our own utility?

  1. Stop looking for a conspiracy. Practically every office in America has a water cooler.

    2. Amazing, And here i thought that not everyone in Ridgewood was as dumb as last Sundays brick and then you come along.
      Congratulations. Your that stupid.

  2. Paulie PFAS to the rescue!

  3. No, the village had water found throughout the town in their buildings, with filters on them for a long time. Then they were all removed for some odd reason. Some departments had nothing for a long time, still some of them were never replaced why. And nothing else was ever offered. This is very interesting.

    1. That’s the way they do stuff. Backward ass with no rhyme or reason. I guess this is another reason our taxes are going up. KK needs good water

  4. Every office orders bottle water. This is silly. Why isn’t anyone angry about building and zoning issues? I can’t do small improvements to my home without the HOA or should I say zoning being inflexible. I am a prisoner in my home by wanting to get a permit and do the right thing while others illegally installations.

    1. Meanwhile they bend over backwards and destroy a park and build a pavilion and a weird tree area that looks like shit for a NY tenant in a park ( Habernickel) that is funded by YOUR tax dollars but you can’t improve your own home. Crazy!!!!

  5. So this from environmentally conscious Pam Perron who demanded an end to bottled water at village hall a few years ago

The same environmentally conscious Pam Perron who wants more trees planted yet insists on clear cutting all the Schedler trees to make way for a plastic grass field

The same environmentally conscious Pam Perron who pushed for No mow May and other environmental initiatives while destroying the environment

Looks like Pam Perron is a fake as plastic grass

  6. There’s a perfectly good brook to get a drink out of 100 yards away.

  7. Many offices have a water cooler, but they dont typically own and manage their own water utility. this is a terrible and tone deaf act. This is especially true given all the clowns who claim the village water is poison. Not only is that inaccurate, but its comical in view of the fact that most bottled water is simply packaged tap water. do you know what’s in the bottled water? No, you dont because unlike a municipal utility, bottled water is not required to report or publish their testing.

  8. I told you don’t believe anything that comes out a village hall,They are full of shit. It’s one scam at the next. They are professional bullshit storytellers. The old employees will tell you the place is a joke. No employees have no idea what’s going on, they’ve been brainwashed. And they’re scared. And most residents in town don’t know what the hell is going on.
