Cape May NJ, The wait is officially over. As millions of travelers pack their bags for Memorial Day weekend, state officials dropped excellent news at the annual State of the Shore event in Asbury Park: New Jersey’s ocean water quality and beaches are in pristine, top-tier shape.

Expectations are at an all-time high for the Garden State. Following a massive 2025 tourism season that drew over 124 million visitors and generated a $52 billion economic impact, 2026 is projected to break every existing record.

Between the United States celebrating its milestone 250th birthday and the influx of international soccer fans arriving for FIFA World Cup events, the Jersey Shore is stepping onto a global stage. Fortunately, the environment is ready to cooperate.

The Verdict on Water Quality: No Ocean Closures Since 2022

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium confirmed that the state’s rigorous testing protocols are already in full swing.

Through the state’s Cooperative Coastal Monitoring Program (CCMP), scientists track bacterial levels across public ocean, back bay, and coastal river beaches. The track record speaks for itself: New Jersey has not experienced a single ocean beach closure due to bacterial standard exceedances since 2022.

  • The 2025 Data: Out of 3,346 ocean water samples analyzed last summer, there were zero closures and only 11 temporary advisories—most of which occurred strictly as brief, predictable bi-products of heavy, overnight rainstorms.

  • Freshwater Protection: The state’s environmental defense network isn’t just focused on salt water. The DEP has launched regular weekly monitoring flyovers and continuous data-buoys at ten major inland bodies of water—including the Manasquan Reservoir and Lake Hopatcong—to actively track and manage Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs).

Beach Erosion Defeated: The Blizzard of 2026 Near-Miss

Coastal beaches are structurally robust heading into the holiday weekend, largely thanks to a lucky twist of winter weather.

According to Dr. Jon K. Miller, a Coastal Processes Specialist for the New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium and research professor at the Stevens Institute of Technology, a major late-winter storm nearly wreaked havoc on local coastlines.

“New Jersey’s beaches narrowly escaped disaster when the most memorable storm of the season – the Blizzard of 2026 – changed course,” Dr. Miller explained. “While it increased our snowfall totals, it minimized the severe coastal erosion typically associated with a storm of that magnitude.”

While hot spots like Sea Bright, Ocean City, and Strathmere experienced mild erosion over the fall, massive infrastructure investments are underway to fortify the coastline against future weather events.

$141 Million Secured for Beach and Dune Restoration

The federal government, alongside state and local partners, has greenlit major funding to replenish and protect New Jersey’s dune systems throughout the summer and fall:

  • Cape May County ($99 Million): Engineered beach repairs are launching in Sea Isle City in early June 2026, followed immediately by Strathmere in late June. Landmark projects in Ocean City, Avalon, and Stone Harbor will begin mid-summer.

  • Monmouth County ($42 Million): Periodic sand nourishment and dune protection initiatives are scheduled for Port Monmouth, Sea Bright, and Monmouth Beach starting in late summer.

With crystal-clear water testing records, heavily fortified coastlines, and a massive line-up of historic cultural events on the horizon, the Garden State is perfectly positioned to deliver a legendary summer.
