From Pandemic Pivot to Beloved Tradition: The Story Behind Ridgewood’s 3,000+ Graduation Banners

Ridgewood NJ, If you take a drive through the Village of Ridgewood this week, you will notice a vibrant, community-wide burst of school spirit. Early Saturday morning, a dedicated team of Ridgewood High School (RHS) volunteers gathered to hang 430 customized senior banners across town, officially kicking off the graduation countdown for the spectacular Class of 2026.
The massive community effort was spearheaded by the RHS Alumni Association and received strong logistical backing from high school administrators, passionate Project Graduation 2026 parents, and local resident volunteers.
A Pandemic Pivot Turned Into a Timeless Village Tradition
While many look at the banners as a beautiful way to decorate the Village, the initiative carries a deep historical meaning for local families. What originally began in the spring of 2020 as a creative, socially distanced way to honor graduates during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic has blossomed into one of Ridgewood’s most anticipated annual milestones.
Now in its seventh consecutive year, the banner program has achieved an incredible milestone of its own. To date, exactly 3,084 senior banners have been hung across the neighborhood over the last nearly a decade.
The annual display serves as a powerful, highly visible reminder of the shared pride, tradition, and community spirit that unites generations of Ridgewood Maroons.
