Ridgewood NJ, When an emergency strikes, every second counts. Yet, patients across New Jersey are facing massive delays before ever seeing an ER doctor.
According to a comprehensive data analysis by Compare the Market, 48 New Jersey hospitals have average emergency room wait times that exceed the national average. The study reviewed 2,095 hospitals across the United States using publicly available historical performance data compiled from Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) reporting datasets via HospitalStats.org. Nationally, the benchmark average emergency room wait time sits at 2 hours and 42 minutes. Unfortunately for Garden State residents, a vast majority of local facilities fail to meet that standard.
The ER Hotspots: Essex, Middlesex, and Monmouth Counties Hit Hardest
While New Jersey doesn’t house the absolute longest wait times in the nation, the localized congestion is a massive headache for residents.
Essex County leads the state with seven hospitals exceeding the national wait-time average. Three of the top twelve most congested hospitals in the state are located right in Newark, led by The University Hospital, which features the longest average wait time in New Jersey at a staggering 5 hours and 48 minutes.
Middlesex and Monmouth counties follow closely behind, each with five hospitals topping national averages. On the flip side, residents in Hunterdon County can rejoice—not a single hospital from their county made the list of underperforming ERs.

Why Are New Jersey ER Wait Times So High?
Industry experts point to a variety of systemic pressures compounding the backlog in emergency rooms. An ongoing shortage of specialized healthcare staff, overcrowding from primary care overflow, and delayed patient discharges (which bottlenecks ER beds because upstairs hospital rooms remain occupied) all contribute significantly to the multi-hour wait times seen above.
The Takeaway: While these times represent statistical averages, individual experiences can vary radically based on the time of day, day of the week, and severity of your triage status. If you are facing a non-life-threatening medical situation, checking into a local urgent care clinic might save you hours of sitting in an ER waiting room.

The long wait times exist because people with no insurance use the ER as a personal doctor.
This is the result of being a ‘sanctuary’ state. Illegal aliens get sick, they have no where to go.
The new Valley Hospital in Paramus, emergency room is having some problems. Supposedly there’s not enough rooms. I was there last week and it did not go that smooth. We were there a long time. Even paramedics are saying the same thing. They should use the old Valley Hospital in Richmond as an overflow that would make sense.
