RIDGEWOOD, NJ — The Ridgewood Police Department has issued an urgent public safety notice urging residents to remain vigilant following two separate concerning encounters with wild raccoons within the Village over the weekend.
Local authorities and Animal Control are actively investigating the incidents to ensure community safety.
Recent Raccoon Incidents Reported in the Village
The police department received two distinct reports regarding abnormal wildlife behavior in heavily trafficked community areas:
-
The Attack: On Sunday, the Ridgewood Police received a report detailing a raccoon attack that occurred on Saturday, May 30th, at approximately 7:00 PM. The incident took place in the vicinity of Maple Field and the Community Garden.
-
The Sighting: The following afternoon, at around 2:15 PM, a second report was filed regarding a noticeably sick-looking raccoon observed crossing Meadowbrook Avenue.
Out of an abundance of caution, the Ridgewood Police Department is advising all residents to remain highly alert in these specific areas, as well as throughout the rest of the Village. Animal Control has been formally notified and is currently actively responding to the situation on the ground.
Critical Safety Precautions for Residents
Wildlife officials and local police are reminding community members to exercise extreme caution and review standard safety protocols regarding local wildlife.
To prevent further incidents, residents are urged to follow these safety guidelines strictly:
-
Keep Your Distance: Do not approach, feed, or attempt to handle any wild animals under any circumstances.
-
Supervise Children: Keep children under close, direct supervision when playing outdoors.
-
Leash Your Pets: Ensure all domestic pets are kept leashed, secured, and strictly under control while outside.
-
Identify Warning Signs: Avoid any wildlife that appears overtly aggressive, unusually tame, disoriented, injured, or sick.
-
Report Anomalies: Immediately report any sightings of aggressive or abnormal animal behavior directly to the Ridgewood Police Department.
-
Emergency Protocol: If you or a family member are bitten or scratched by a wild animal, seek immediate medical attention and notify the police department right away.

Seems like so many animal attacks in Bergen County, many many are rabid: coyotes, beaver, raccoon, fox, and more,
Is it in the water?
i had a racoon a few year ago that was walking around int he daytime around the house with 3 small children. I called the city. They sent someone over and his conclusion was that yes, there is a large racoon that could be rabid walking around the house during daylight hours. Then he left.
That was it. Thanks for confirming dipshit – did nothing about it at all. Dummies.
Does pepper spray work on raccoons
Give it a try. Make sure to get really close first.
