MAHWAH, NJ — A driver who attempted to pull off a “dash and gas” at a busy Route 17 truck stop was quickly tracked down by local authorities, thanks to the quick reflexes of a sharp-eyed station employee.

The incident comes at a time of rising frustration over local fuel costs, as Garden State drivers are currently shelling out an average of $4.029 per gallon—surpassing the current national average of $3.999. Financial pressures on drivers are expected to intensify soon; starting July 1, 2026, New Jersey will join five other states (California, Illinois, Michigan, Maryland, and Mississippi) in implementing automatic inflation adjustments and fuel tax hikes.

How the Route 17 Incident Unfolded

According to the Mahwah Police Department, a motorist filled their tank at a local highway truck stop on Wednesday night and immediately drove off without offering payment.

However, the driver didn’t count on the swift reaction of the station’s gas attendant. The employee managed to memorize and record the vehicle’s license plate number before it sped away, allowing responding officers to rapidly trace the car back to its registered business.

The “Misunderstanding” Cleared Up

When confronted by Mahwah police, the driver claimed the entire situation was an honest misunderstanding and stated they had fully intended to pay for the fuel.

Ultimately, a quiet resolution was reached:

  • The driver agreed to immediately return and settle the outstanding bill.

  • The gas station management agreed to accept the payment and decline filing formal criminal charges.

While this specific highway mishap ended peacefully, local police remind residents that deliberately leaving a pump without paying carries steep fines and potential jail time in New Jersey. With fuel costs continuing to climb across Bergen County, service stations remain on high alert for drive-away theft.

  1. The gas tax will rise due to lower revenues as the electric cars do NOT pay.
The gas tax funds the bloated NJ Transit system and not much is left to fix potholes
