RIDGEWOOD, NJ — Commuters in downtown Ridgewood have a reason to celebrate as the Village Manager officially announced the opening of the upgraded bus shelter at Van Neste Square.

The  infrastructure improvement marks a key step forward in enhancing public transportation amenities for local commuters and visitors in Bergen County.

The original Ridgewood Bus Station had a unique rich history, reflecting the evolution of transportation in the area.

Historic Significance

  • The Ridgewood Bus Station, designed by architect J. Robert Gilchrist, is noted for its mid-century modern design from the 1950s. It has been recognized for its historical significance by the Ridgewood Historic Preservation Commission.
  • An iconic 1960s bus station in downtown Ridgewood was demolished in 2025, after falling into disrepair marking a significant change in the area’s transportation landscape.

State NJ DOT Grant Funds Downtown Infrastructure

The upgrade project comes at no direct cost to local property tax assessments for this grant allocation, having been funded through a State NJ DOT Grant secured last year.

Village officials expressed gratitude to Legislative District 40 representatives who helped secure the funding:

  • Senator Kristin Corrado

  • Assemblyman Chris DePhillips

  • Assemblyman Al Barlas

The new shelter provides improved weather protection and comfort for commuters relying on NJ Transit bus routes through downtown Ridgewood.

  1. The politicians hand us back some Pennies like they are doing us a favor.
Then we always kiss their asses in the press release.

  2. Where is KK?
