Jersey City NJ, Boaters planning to catch the historic July 4th fireworks or the majestic fleet of tall ships this summer need to prepare for major changes on the water.

The New Jersey State Police has issued an urgent Marine Safety Information Bulletin warning the boating public of heightened maritime activity and strict security protocols across the region from July 1–9, 2026.

As New York Harbor transforms into the epicenter of America’s 250th-anniversary celebrations—hosting New York Sail 4th 250, the International Naval Review 250, and the International Aerial Review—local and federal agencies are enforcing tight gridlocks to ensure public safety.

## Where Are the Maritime Restrictions?

Significant maritime restrictions, security zones, and regulated transit areas will be heavily enforced throughout major local waterways, including:

  • New York Harbor

  • Sandy Hook Bay

  • The Hudson River

  • The East River

Boaters should expect temporary anchorage closures and a massive, highly visible presence of the U.S. Coast Guard alongside partner law enforcement agencies patrolling the boundaries.

⚠️ Crucial Rule for Boaters: Strict security zones will be moving and static around all participating tall ships and naval military vessels. Getting too close could result in severe federal penalties.

## Safety Checklist: What You Need to Know Before Setting Sail

Law enforcement is urging all captains to strictly assess their readiness before untying from the dock. If you are heading out, ensure you review:

  1. Vessel Readiness & Fuel: Is your boat mechanically sound for extended idling in crowded waters?

  2. Operator Experience: Navigating high-traffic spectator zones requires expert handling, especially after dark.

  3. Weather Monitoring: Conditions can change rapidly; keep an active eye on local marine forecasts.

  4. Spectator Spots: Water view zones are available on a first-come, first-served basis. While advance registration is highly encouraged, authorities warn it does not guarantee entry if zones reach maximum capacity.

## Emergency Contacts & Staying Informed

To stay safe and compliant during the massive 9-day celebration, mariners must closely monitor VHF Channel 16.

  • To Report Suspicious Activity: Contact the National Response Center at 1-877-24WATCH.

  • In an Emergency: Call 911 immediately or hail law enforcement authorities directly on VHF Channel 16.

  • Official Maps & Updates: For the latest real-time navigation updates, maps of security zones, and official Local Notices to Mariners, visit the U.S. Coast Guard Navigation Center.
