HACKENSACK, NJ — One of New Jersey’s most legendary culinary landmarks is gearing up for a massive change.
White Manna, the historic 80-year-old hamburger shop that has anchored Hackensack’s food scene since 1946, is officially relocating. But don’t worry—fans of the iconic retro aesthetic and neon signage can breathe a sigh of relief. Instead of facing the wrecking ball, the entire historic building will be physically transported to its new home just three-quarters of a mile up the street.

The Hackensack Planning Board recently approved a redevelopment application that will move the legendary slider joint from its original, cramped quarters at 358 River St. to a much larger lot at 112-120 Hackensack Ave.
Why is White Manna Moving?
For decades, the tiny River Street diner has been a staple of North Jersey food culture, drawing massive crowds and international acclaim from legendary food personalities like Anthony Bourdain and Guy Fieri. However, its cult-status popularity consistently clashed with its physical limitations.
According to official planning board documents, the current location has long been “constrained by its size,” leaving virtually no room for modern kitchen operations, proper storage, or crucial accessibility upgrades.
To solve this, the city integrated White Manna into its downtown rehabilitation plan, ensuring the local institution stays in Hackensack while giving it the space it needs to thrive.
What to Expect at the New Hackensack Avenue Location:
-
More Space for Fans: A brand-new, one-story addition will be built directly behind the historic structure to comfortably accommodate more diners.
-
Upgraded Kitchen & Storage: Modernized back-of-house operations to handle the high volume of slider orders.
-
Massive Upgrades: A significantly larger dining area and, crucially, an expanded parking lot.
Preserving History: The core mission of the relocation plan is to modernize the business operations without losing an ounce of the vintage charm, neon glow, and nostalgic atmosphere that made White Manna a local institution.
While the Hackensack Planning Board has officially greenlit the relocation proposal, an exact timeline for when the physical building will make its journey north has not yet been announced. Stay tuned for updates on this historic move!
