Mahwah NJ, A horrifying incident of road rage in Bergen County has left an elderly couple shaken and a local resident behind bars. A 45-year-old Mahwah man faces serious assault charges after allegedly attacking a 78-year-old landscaper and his 68-year-old wife—all because they followed the law and stopped for a school bus.
The violent encounter, which took place in broad daylight, has sparked widespread concern over public safety and escalating traffic disputes in residential areas.
The Incident: Stopped for Safety, Targeted for Violence
According to Mahwah Police Captain Michael Blondin, officers responded to Glasgow Terrace at approximately 8:40 a.m. on Thursday, June 25, following reports of a heated dispute in progress. However, by the time police arrived on the scene, the aggressor had already fled.
Investigators quickly pieced together a disturbing timeline:
-
The Catalyst: The elderly victim and his wife were operating a commercial landscaping vehicle when they encountered an approaching school bus with its flashing red lights activated. Complying with state traffic safety laws, the couple brought their truck to a halt.
-
The Confrontation: While they were stopped, an unknown man approached the vehicle, furiously shouting at the couple for stopping in front of his residential property. Once the school bus cleared, the landscapers moved along to their designated job site nearby.
-
The Escalation: A short time later, the same man tracked them down. Police state he approached the 68-year-old woman in an intensely threatening manner.
Violent Assault Leaves Elderly Victim Unable to Breathe
When the 78-year-old husband stepped in to protect his wife, the situation turned critical.
The suspect allegedly threw the elderly man to the ground, kicked him repeatedly, and wrapped both hands tightly around his neck. The victim later told responding officers that the pressure applied to his throat left him completely unable to breathe.
When the man’s wife desperately tried to intervene to save her husband, the suspect struck her multiple times, throwing her to the ground before running away.
Suspect in Custody at Bergen County Jail
Following a swift investigation, authorities identified the suspect as Aston Hamilton, 45, of Mahwah.
After police spent the day tracking his whereabouts, an arrest warrant was officially issued. Facing escalating pressure, Hamilton turned himself in at Mahwah Police Headquarters later that evening.
He was processed and subsequently transported to the Bergen County Jail, where he is currently being held pending a central judicial processing hearing in Bergen County Superior Court. Hamilton faces heavy charges, including:
-
Aggravated assault by strangulation
-
Simple assault

FAFO
Lincoln thought they should be sent back to Africa!
Abraham Lincoln did advocate for the colonization of freed slaves, but not in a forced manner.
Lincoln supported the idea of resettling free Black Americans to Africa or other regions, believing it could help address racial tensions in the U.S. He proposed this idea during his presidency, particularly in the early years, but emphasized that it should be voluntary
.
Colonization Plans
Lincoln’s colonization proposals included sending freed slaves to places like Liberia and Central America
.
He believed that this could be a solution to the challenges posed by slavery and race relations
.
Voluntary Nature
Importantly, Lincoln did not envision forced deportations; his plans were centered around voluntary migration
.
Many Black Americans, however, were born in the U.S. and did not support the idea of leaving their homelan
