Ramsey NJ, A Friday afternoon commute took a terrifying turn in Bergen County when a single-vehicle accident left a driver trapped over a steep embankment. The incident triggered a massive, highly coordinated response from local emergency crews, showcasing the seamless teamwork of North Jersey’s first responders.

Units from the Ramsey Rescue Squad, Ramsey Fire Department, Ramsey EMS, and the Ramsey Police Department were immediately dispatched to the scene following reports of a motor vehicle accident with potential entrapment.
Technical Rope Rescue Saves Trapped Driver
Upon arriving on the scene, command units located a single vehicle resting precariously at the bottom of a ravine. Fortunately, responders confirmed that the patient inside the vehicle was conscious and in stable condition.
Because of the steep terrain, a standard extraction was impossible. Crew members immediately shifted gears to execute a technical high-angle rescue operation:
-
The Anchor Point: Ramsey Fire positioned Ladder Truck 441 to serve as a secure high-point anchor for the rigging system.
-
The Hauling System: Rescue and fire crews meticulously constructed a heavy-duty hauling system connected to a specialized stokes basket.
-
The Extraction: Once the patient was safely secured and packaged inside the stokes basket, teams utilized a roof ladder alongside the hauling system to carefully guide the basket up the rocky embankment.
The driver was successfully brought to ground level and immediately transferred to the custody of Ramsey EMS for a thorough medical evaluation.
Hazmat and Heavy Towing Manage the Aftermath
With the driver safe, emergency operations expanded to protect the local environment and clear the roadway.
Because the vehicle had plunged into a ravine near a local waterway, Mahwah Fire Company 2 and the Bergen County Hazmat team were dispatched to monitor and mitigate potential vehicle fluid leaks into the stream.
Shortly after, Big Tows Inc. arrived on the scene with a flatbed and a heavy-duty wrecker. Utilizing precision rigging, operators successfully hoisted the heavily damaged vehicle out of the ravine.
Thanks to the swift, proactive training and seamless communication between all responding agencies, a highly dangerous situation was resolved safely with no major injuries reported. Solid work by all involved!
