Ridgewood NJ, The Village of Ridgewood has officially entered a transformative chapter in downtown management and economic revitalization with the launch of the Ridgewood Business Alliance (RBA). As one of Bergen County’s newest Special Improvement Districts (SIDs), the RBA brings dedicated funding, strategic vision, and data-driven management to protect and enhance Ridgewood’s premier commercial corridors.

The formation of the RBA comes after several years of rigorous feasibility planning, municipal analysis, and community input aimed at positioning downtown Ridgewood for long-term growth.

Why Now? Navigating Modern Retail & Local Challenges

Like many vibrant suburban downtowns across New Jersey, Ridgewood faces evolving economic pressures—including competition from e-commerce platforms, shifting consumer shopping habits, and regional retail destinations. On a local level, rising operating expenses, parking constraints, and public space needs created an urgent call for unified action.

The RBA directly addresses these issues by coordinating efforts among the Village of Ridgewood, the local Chamber of Commerce, and the Ridgewood Guild. Key focus areas include:

  • Regional Marketing & Promotion: Drawing shoppers, diners, and visitors from across Northern New Jersey.

  • Beautification & Public Spaces: Upgrading sidewalk aesthetics, seating, signage, and streetscapes.

  • Business Attraction & Retention: Utilizing research-driven analysis to bring high-demand retail and dining options to vacant storefronts.

  • Infrastructure Advocacy: Collaborating with municipal leaders to streamline parking and zoning policies.

“Ridgewood is a marquee community and shopping destination in North Jersey, but we needed the structure of a SID to carry us into the future,” said Deputy Mayor Pamela Perron, who serves on the RBA Board of Directors. “I am thrilled that Ridgewood has joined the New Jersey SID community.”

Experienced Leadership at the Helm

To guide operations, the RBA appointed Steve Grillo as its first Executive Director on June 1, following his five-year tenure leading Explore Millburn-Short Hills. Joining him in August as Marketing Director is Corinne Mahoney, who previously managed marketing alongside Grillo in Millburn-Short Hills.

Grillo and feasibility consultant Stuart Koperweis both serve on the board of Downtown New Jersey, cementing strong regional leadership ties.

“This is a remarkable community in so many ways, and it is inspiring to see the Village Council’s commitment to providing the business community with the resources needed to remain competitive for years to come,” stated Steve Grillo.

Unifying Downtown Support Under One Strategic Vision

For local business owners and property managers, the creation of a SID provides consistent funding and structured execution that was previously out of reach for individual merchants.

“Downtown Ridgewood and the surrounding commercial corridors are strong – but there were pieces missing,” explained Glenn Carlough, RBA Board Chair and owner of the Steel Wheel Tavern. “The RBA will be able to provide data-driven recommendations to attract new businesses, cutting-edge assistance for existing ones, and capital improvements that have been discussed for some time but lacked the funding or organization to be implemented.”

About the Ridgewood Business Alliance (RBA)

Established to manage the Village of Ridgewood’s Special Improvement District, the Ridgewood Business Alliance (RBA) supports a vibrant local economy across commercial districts. Through regional promotion, merchant support, infrastructure advocacy, and strategic partnerships with local and state leaders, the RBA ensures Ridgewood remains a top-tier destination for dining, shopping, and community life in Bergen County.
