HAWTHORNE, NJ — A sudden infrastructure failure disrupted the Monday afternoon commute for several northern New Jersey residents. Early in the afternoon on Monday, July 13, 2026, a utility pole outfitted with live electrical wires and street lighting fixtures unexpectedly collapsed directly into the NJ Transit Hawthorne train station commuter parking lot.

The falling heavy structure struck at least two passenger vehicles parked in the lot, causing noticeable body and structural damage.

Emergency Teams Rush to Cordon Off Live Wires

Because the downed utility pole was carrying active, live electrical currents, local authorities treated the scene as a high-priority hazard. A massive multi-agency emergency response team quickly arrived at the commuter lot to secure the perimeter and prevent any accidental electrocutions or further property damage.

Responding Agencies Included:

  • Hawthorne Police Department (HPD)

  • Hawthorne Fire Department

  • NJ Transit Police Department

  • PSE&G Electric Division Crews

A significant portion of the commuter parking lot had to be entirely cordoned off to both incoming traffic and foot passengers while emergency personnel stood by.

No Injuries Reported Following Potential Disaster

Miraculously, despite the high volume of foot traffic typically associated with an active NJ Transit hub and the presence of dangerous live wires, the Hawthorne Police Department confirmed that no injuries were reported in connection with the mishap.

PSE&G utility crews worked efficiently to isolate the power lines, cut off the active electrical currents, and clear the fallen pole and lighting fixtures from the impacted vehicles. The cordoned section of the lot remained closed until utility professionals officially deemed the area safe for public access and vehicle retrieval.

The exact cause of the utility pole’s collapse remains under investigation by local officials and utility providers.
