Judge Orders Maplewood Man Detained After Alleged Early-Morning Joyride in Stolen NJ Transit Armored Vehicle

Maplewood NJ, A 39-year-old Maplewood resident will remain behind bars pending trial after being accused of stealing a massive SWAT truck from an NJ Transit facility and taking it on an early-morning joyride across Essex and Hudson counties.
In Superior Court on Wednesday, July 22, Judge Naazneen Khan ordered Christopher Bruton-Frazier held in county jail without bail, citing an “unmanageable risk” to the public. Prosecutors noted that the alleged July 14 heist was committed while Bruton-Frazier was already on parole for two previous indictments.
How the NJ Transit Security Breach Happened
According to court records and prosecutors, the incident unfolded in the early hours of July 14:

Facility Intrusion (~3:10 AM): Bruton-Frazier was dropped off by a ride-share service near the NJ Transit police tactical response unit headquarters in Newark’s Ironbound section. He allegedly gained access to the facility and wandered inside for nearly an hour.

Vehicle Theft (~4:00 AM): The suspect opened a garage bay door and commandeered a 2018 Ford F-550 armored tactical vehicle, commonly known as a Lenco BearCat.

Multi-County Joyride: Bruton-Frazier allegedly drove the heavy SWAT vehicle out of Newark into Jersey City before heading back toward Essex County.
An NJ Transit spokesperson stated that how the suspect gained entry to the facility and managed to operate the vehicle remains under active investigation.
GPS Tracking & Facial Recognition Lead to Arrest
The theft went unnoticed until approximately 5:00 AM, when an arriving police sergeant realized the BearCat was missing.

Facial Recognition: Investigators used facial recognition technology to identify Bruton-Frazier as a match.

The abandoned BearCat was eventually located on Harper Avenue in Irvington—just three blocks from the suspect’s residence.

On July 16, law enforcement officers executed a search warrant at Bruton-Frazier’s home. Inside, officers recovered:

Facing 14 Criminal Charges
Describing the rampage as showing a “blatant disregard for the law,” the assistant prosecutor successfully argued against Bruton-Frazier’s release.
Bruton-Frazier now faces 14 separate criminal offenses related to the theft, weapons, and narcotics. A follow-up court hearing is scheduled for August 21.
