WESTWOOD, N.J. — Heavy evening storms caused a major disruption along the NJ Transit Pascack Valley Line when a massive tree crashed down directly onto the train tracks.

Thanks to swift coordination between the NJ Transit Police and the Westwood Fire Department, local emergency crews successfully cleared the debris, allowing rail traffic to safely resume.

Heavy Storm Causes Track Obstruction in Westwood

On the evening of Monday, July 27, severe thunderstorm activity swept through Bergen County, knocking down branches and compromising mature trees across the region.

Following a call for assistance from NJ Transit Police, members of the Westwood Fire Department responded to the scene along the Pascack Valley Line where a large tree was completely blocking the railway.

Chainsaws and Pull Chains: Emergency Responders Reopen the Rail

Clearing the track required heavy manpower and strategic equipment:

  • Sectioning the Debris: Firefighters used power saws to cut apart the expansive branches and heavy limbs blocking the right-of-way.

  • Heavy Removal: Crews utilized a heavy-duty pull chain system to drag the massive main tree trunk off the rail line.

  • Safety Restored: Once the tracks were completely cleared and inspected, NJ Transit train service was cleared to proceed safely.

Fortunately, no trains were struck by the falling tree during the storm, and no injuries were reported among commuters or emergency crews.
