Body of Missing 10-Year-Old Girl Located in Passaic River After Multi-Agency Search

PASSAIC, NJ — A tragic multi-agency search operation came to a heartbreaking end on Friday, July 31, after the body of a missing 10-year-old girl was discovered in the Passaic River near the Market Street Bridge.

The incident began on Wednesday evening around 6:21 p.m. when three young children accessed a boat ramp near Dundee Island Park in Passaic and were swept into the water.

 Timeline of the Incident & Emergency Response

  • Wednesday, 6:21 PM: Three children entered the water off a boat ramp at Dundee Island Park. An 11-year-old girl managed to pull herself out of the river to safety, while two 10-year-old children were carried away by the current. A bystander in the park heroically attempted to reach the struggling children but was unable to reach them.

  • Wednesday, 10:00 PM: Emergency responders recovered the body of a 10-year-old boy—brother to the 11-year-old survivor—not far from where they entered the water.

  • Thursday – Friday: A massive two-day search operation was launched utilizing boats, drones, dive teams, and helicopters across local, county, and state agencies.

  • Friday, 6:00 PM: Search teams spotted the missing 10-year-old girl downriver near the Market Street Bridge. Passaic Mayor Hector Lora confirmed her recovery Friday night.


Community Mourns & A Rainbow Over the Passaic

Following the recovery on Friday evening, Passaic Mayor Hector Lora expressed deep emotional support for the grieving families and praised the unified rescue efforts across North Jersey.

Tonight, a rainbow stretched across the sky over the place where this little girl was recovered from the river. In a day filled with heartbreak, it was a sight that many of us will never forget. So many of us prayed for her to be found today and I want to thank God for bringing some peace to the family and all of our communities.”

A temporary memorial has been erected on the Wall Street Bridge in Passaic to honor the memory of the two young victims. Members of the community have left flowers, plush toys, and heartfelt messages on a memorial display reading, “God bless. In loving memory of a precious young life.”

Mayor Lora extended appreciation on behalf of the grieving family to the first responders from the City of Passaic, Passaic County, Essex County, Bergen County, and the New Jersey State Police for their tireless efforts throughout the search.
