Generative AI Used to Create Synthetic Viruses, Triggering Urgent Biosecurity Warnings

Ridgewood NJ,  Artificial intelligence has officially crossed into new territory: writing complete viral genomes from scratch. While researchers hail the breakthrough as a major milestone for life sciences, leading health experts are warning that generative AI-designed pathogens could pose unprecedented biosafety and biosecurity threats if left unregulated.

The debate centers on a groundbreaking study where scientists used advanced genome language models—dubbed Evo 1 and Evo 2—to engineer custom bacteriophages (viruses that infect and replicate inside bacteria, specifically E. coli). Out of 300 AI-designed genomes tested, 16 successfully destroyed target E. coli bacteria.

“This is the first time generative AI has been used to design a complete genome,” noted Stanford University Assistant Professor Brian Hie, who co-led the study alongside PhD student Samuel King. “It’s something that can replicate and have other functions inside cells… this was new territory for us.”

Prof. Patrick Cai, Chair of Synthetic Genomics at the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology, emphasized the broader implications, stating that genome language models “are beginning to learn the design principles encoded by evolution, opening the door to AI-assisted genome writing.”

Urgent Biosafety Questions Surrounding Synthetic Pathogens

Despite the therapeutic potential of bacteriophages in fighting antibiotic-resistant bacteria, biological safety experts argue that the technology outpaces existing regulatory safeguards.

In a commentary published in Science, Dr. Thomas Inglesby and Dr. Moritz Hanke from the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security stressed the immediate need for global oversight:

Although this is promising for life sciences applications, it also raises urgent biosafety and biosecurity questions. The ability to compose viral genomes using generative AI now exists; the governance to safely steer it does not.”

Inglesby and Hanke questioned whether generative viral genome tools could be exploited to cause severe harm, warning that the development of new disease-causing viruses should be strictly off-limits.

Renewed Focus on Pandemics and Lab Safety

The breakthrough comes amid intensified scrutiny over biological research standards and the origins of global outbreaks. Former White House COVID-19 Coordinator Dr. Ashish Jha recently expressed his view that the COVID-19 pandemic likely originated from a laboratory leak, while released diary entries from former NIAID Director Dr. Anthony Fauci have raised further debate regarding early market-origin theories.

As generative AI makes biological engineering accessible at unprecedented speeds, experts agree that establishing strict international governance is now an urgent global priority.
