Westwood NJ, In a major relief for local public works crews and residents, Westwood Mayor Ray Arroyo shared an update regarding the Emerson Road Pump Station, announcing that recent persistent power failure alarms have finally been resolved.
For weeks, Borough personnel were forced to respond to middle-of-the-night power failure alerts at the facility—often during all hours of the day and night.
The Breakthrough: Investigating the 2 AM Alarms
The turning point came when Westwood Department of Public Works (DPW) Superintendent Rick Woods answered yet another 2 AM alarm call at the station.
Borough Electrician and local resident Charlie Johnston met Superintendent Woods on-site to trace the underlying root cause of the disruptions.
Together, the team initiated a comprehensive diagnostic process alongside utility and equipment partners:

Utility Infrastructure: PSE&G arrived on-site to replace a neighborhood transformer.

Circuit Maintenance: Johnston replaced an electrical circuit breaker to eliminate potential hardware faults.

Control System Diagnostics: Johnston collaborated with Rapid Pump, the vendor responsible for installing the pump control systems, to analyze internal electrical logic.
The Root Cause: Faulty Relay Discovery
During the joint inspection with Rapid Pump, Johnston identified the core culprit: a faulty relay switch.
The malfunctioned component was falsely registering “no power” when full electrical power was actively present, triggering auto-shutdown procedures across the pumps and dispatching emergency alerts to DPW staff.
Once the faulty relay was replaced, system operations returned to normal.
