Why Sleeping with a Night Light Could Be Damaging Your Heart

Ridgewood NJ, Sleeping with a TV on or letting streetlight filter through your blinds might seem harmless, but a major new study suggests nighttime light exposure could be doing real damage to your cardiovascular system.

Researchers tracked 11,071 adults initially free of cardiovascular disease over several years to observe the long-term impacts of nighttime ambient light. Participants wore wrist sensors for seven days to log light exposure from everyday sources, including televisions, smartphones, and ambient streetlights.

Key Findings: How Nighttime Light Affects the Heart

The study’s long-term results highlight a strong link between artificial light during sleep and structural changes in the heart:

  • Structural Heart Damage: Cardiac MRIs conducted three years into the study showed that participants exposed to higher levels of light at night developed thicker heart walls and weaker heartbeats.

  • Increased Risk of Heart Failure: Over an 8- to 10-year follow-up period, individuals in the highest light exposure group faced a 29% higher risk of heart failure compared to those sleeping in dark environments.

  • Higher Cardiovascular Events: The high-exposure group also experienced a 24% higher risk of heart attack, a 33% elevated risk of stroke, and a 26% increased risk of cardiovascular death.

Why Does Light Exposure Impact Sleep & Heart Health?

Artificial light at night disrupts your body’s natural circadian rhythm and suppresses melatonin production, preventing your cardiovascular system from entering its critical nighttime recovery phase. Keeping your bedroom fully dark allows your heart rate and blood pressure to dip naturally, protecting long-term heart function.
