Ridgewood NJ, For Firefighter/EMT Kevin Monton, serving the community with the Ridgewood Professional Firefighters FMBA Local 47 is more than just a career—it’s a family tradition. Joining Platoon B in 2021, Kevin represents the third generation of his family to wear the uniform in the Village of Ridgewood.
Carrying on a Family Legacy
Kevin was inspired to join the fire service by listening to his father and grandfather discuss their own careers as professional firefighters in Ridgewood. Hearing about their challenging and rewarding experiences shaped his motivation to pursue the profession.
“Firefighting is the most rewarding career in the world,” Monton says. “If you have a positive attitude and want to help others, then you should do it. I promise you that you will not regret it.”
Making a Difference in Ridgewood
When reflecting on his proudest moments on the job, Kevin highlights the direct, positive impact on local residents.
“I’m most proud of the times that people have gone out of their way to send an email or stop by the firehouse, and express their gratitude for something that I did on a call to help them,” Monton shared. “That feeling of knowing that I was able to help somebody on one of their worst days is a feeling that can rarely be found elsewhere. And I’m lucky enough to experience that pretty frequently.”
Life Beyond the Station house
Outside of his duties with Platoon B, Kevin enjoys riding dirtbikes and spending quality time creating memories with his wife and two children.
He approaches every shift with a clear mindset, guided by his favorite quote: “Today is the first day of the rest of your life.”
“This quote encompasses the attitude that I try to bring to each shift,” Monton explained. “No matter what happened yesterday, today you have a chance to do something good. Make the most of it.”
