Readers Respond to the President race-baiting or Eloquent Compassion
The President doubled-down on his ‘My (fictional) son could have been Trayvon’ to ‘I WAS Trayvon 35 years ago’. His parties in the “choom wagon” from his mis-spent youth must have given him this idea. He further degraded the office with race-baiting and wagging his bony finger.
While we have come to expect charlatans like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, I’d never expect the President to comment on the verdict of a trial as well as playing the race card. This man further embarrasses our country and the office he holds. We got exactly who the majority we voted for: a man clearly not ready for the huge responsibility and decorum for the office.
You are so wrong …
President Obama was not playing a race card. He was explaining honestly, to those who would listen with an open mind, the facts about racism as it exists in the country. He also offered some positive suggestions to help our country eventually move away from this. Black mothers and fathers spend their lives worrying that their sons will be shot. This is an ongoing nightmare for them, and sadly it is a reality in many cases.
Thank God we have an eloquent, compassionate man in office who is clearly up to the huge responsibility of the Office of President, and who has more decorum than several previous presidents. He is truly a class act.
Where are all of the hispanic leaders?
Did Senator Bob Menendez say this ? Or was it Senator Mel Martinez (FL) ?
There are, frankly, very few Hispanic men who haven’t had the experience of walking across the street and hearing the locks click on the doors of cars. That happens to me, at least before I was a senator. There are very few Hispanics who haven’t had the experience of getting on an elevator and a woman clutching her purse nervously and holding her breath until she had a chance to get off. That happens often. And I don’t want to exaggerate this, but those sets of experiences inform how the Hispanic community interprets what happened one night in Florida. Once again, another hispanic was tragically the victim of a beat down. Difference is, this time the victim had a gun and was able to defend himself.
Where are all the hispanic leaders ?
It is a disgrace that Barack Obama, being the brilliant legal mind he is, not to mention the President of the United States, could not diffuse the tension and discuss the law. A man was tried and a jury made a decision based on the law. Simply because the verdict was not what certain people had wanted, does not mean “justice” was not served. Justice is blindfolded for a reason, because facts should determine the outcome of any case. The facts spoke for themselves. Those who feel George Zimmerman has not gotten what he “deserves” need only remember that there were many who felt OJ didn’t get what he deserved, but there were no protests, no riots, no burning the American flag. If Trayvon looked like Obama’s imaginary son, do his daughters look like Tawana Brawley?
Race baiter. Shameless. The man suggests he is the next Lincoln, Kennedy, Reagan and now Martin (Trayvon, not Luther King)
Eloquent? Hardly. More like pandering.
The reason for his talk was two-fold: his me,me,me agenda and to spotlight gun control. He points out the stand-your-ground laws even though that was not a defense in the case. The reason the laws even exist is because homeowners were being convicted for defending themselves in home invasions by criminals. Obama is just following his former chief-of-staff Rahm Emanuel’s line – never let a crisis go to waste.
“You are so wrong…”
To the person who made this comment: You are horribly blind to Obama’s pathological and narcissistic need to interject himself into every cultural event of any size or importance in this country in order to serve his statist agenda. You sound extremely credulous, but more likely than not, you are on Obama’s payroll in some way. Either you say what you say for financial gain, or, perhaps more likely, for the copious psychological income you receive for frustrating the aims of a common political enemy, namely, those of us who wish to live in a nation of laws and not of men. The notion that one would thank G*d Obama is in the White House is particularly ironic and odious when one considers the obvious glee with which he denigrates on an almost daily basis our rich national heritage in religious faith. For you to say that Obama is a class act drains almost all meaning from such words. Furthermore, any speech he gives at this point is an exercise in pantomime. He simply has no credibility left among citizens who prize rationality in public discourse and integrity in those we elect to political office.
