US adults are dumber than the average human

WASHINGTON — It’s long been known that America’s school kids haven’t measured well compared with international peers. Now, there’s a new twist: Adults don’t either.

In math, reading and problem-solving using technology – all skills considered critical for global competitiveness and economic strength – American adults scored below the international average on a global test, according to results released Tuesday.

Adults in Japan, Canada, Australia, Finland and multiple other countries scored significantly higher than the United States in all three areas on the test. Beyond basic reading and math, respondents were tested on activities such as calculating mileage reimbursement due to a salesman, sorting email and comparing food expiration dates on grocery store tags.

Not only did Americans score poorly compared to many international competitors, the findings reinforced just how large the gap is between the nation’s high- and low-skilled workers and how hard it is to move ahead when your parents haven’t.

  1. And what do all those other countries have in common? Your average uneducated Teatard would call them socialist, but more importantly:

THEY INVEST IN THEIR FUCKING SCHOOLS!

    1. Rob can I remind you Ridgewood spends over $90,000,000 on schools ,and the US far out spends other nations with pathetic results

  2. In the US there is far too much focus on things that are unimportant for the real world like sports, etc. Education is most important and sports and other things are totally unimportant if you want your child to succeed – I know too many people are dropping their kids off at after school activities rather than getting them home, doing their home work and studying – how many kids today actually read? Not a lot – more interested in computer games, football, baseball, etc. Remove the items that are unimportant from their activities, or limit them, and have your kids focus on school work then the trend may change – and with adults????? Jesus, I have met some of the dumbest Americans ever while working in white collar jobs – we once had a conference call with a company in Cyprus – the little island in the Med – only for MY BOSS – to ask, what the weather was like in Florida – WHAT???? When less than 10% of Americans have passports, you know that you are a breeding ground for idiots – they don’t travel, don’t know anything about WORLD history and those that have a little bit of knowledge, think they know everything – they’re a bigger group of idiots.

  3. The US doesn’t “far outspend” other developed nations, in terps of GDP it ia roughly on par. The fact that teacher’s salaries have stagnated over the last 10 years is a deterrent to entry…though I understand there is plenty to be made in non-teaching administrative positions, of which I agree there are far too many.

    Is this really news?

Look at who they placed in the White House… twice.

  5. Rob, Occupy Wall Street called. They have been looking for you. I told them you were hanging out at the Ridgewood Blog.

  6. The problem with our schools is not that we don’t spend enough money on them it is that: (1) teachers are protected from being fired for not doing a good job,(2) we spend too much of the money for schools on things unrelated to education (including overpaid administrators and high-end sports fields and gyms). Get rid of the extras and there is plenty of money to pay for excellent teachers. If you still really want the extras pay for them separately. Wouldn’t you love to get the best people to teach your kids the core education they need (i.e., reading/writing, math, science, history)? That would be money well spent. Then if you want your kids to learn music, sports, photography, art, etc., you pay for it yourself.

  7. Harlan, I already do occupy Wall Street. Every. Fucking. Day.

Also, the 1980’s called, and want their stupid joke back.

  8. PJ with all the going on in the USA its not hard to believe that we are getting stupider and stupider

  9. One look at DC and you know this is true

  10. ever try to hire someone under 30 , they are arrogant smug , have no skills and are clueless about almost everything

  11. We don’t invest in our schools, we spend money on them.

  12. It’s not the money — it’s the focus that’s wrong. We focus on sports, so the US has the best sports teams in the world. We don’t seem to care about academics, but we act surprised at the results. Who gets the free rides to high end universities? The jocks, not the nerds.
