The two men vying to be Bergen County sheriff tangled in their final debate Sunday over who could do a better job of cutting the department’s budget.

Incumbent Republican Michael Saudino touted his fiscal record, which he said included cutting more than $5 million from his budget over the last three years while winning praise from the state comptroller’s office on holding down overtime costs.

“We’re being asked to be the role models for the rest of the counties in the state,” Saudino said.

But Democratic challenger James Mordaga continued to press on overtime costs racked up this year plus the pension benefits that Saudino and his four undersheriffs are collecting in addition to their salaries.

“I believe the Sheriff’s Department is going in the wrong direction,” said Mordaga, a former Hackensack police office and the brother of Hackensack Police Director Michael Mordaga.

  1. If you are collecting a government pension then there should not be a government job so you phonies can keep screwing the taxpayer. Pick one or the other.

  2. They are collecting a pension that was earned. The current job is an elected position. If the taxpayers object, then they don’t have to vote for them. The issue is a moot point since both candidates are receiving pensions they earned from their prior positions in law enforcement.
