Sen. Mike Lee: ‘Common Core standards will be the ObamaCare of education’

September 2, 2014

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Mike Lee and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal have a message for Big Government: stop meddling in local education decisions.

“As a U.S. Senator, I’ve seen the federal government make a mess of everything it touches,” Lee, a Republican from Utah, wrote in a recent email sent to supporters through the free market group FreedomWorks.

“And if they’re allowed to stay, Common Core standards will be the ObamaCare of education,” Lee wrote, according toNewsmax. “Common Core is the DC takeover of our school system. It will dumb down standards and cheapen the education our children receive.”

Newsmax reports Lee’s comments come just days after Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal filed a lawsuit last week alleging the Obama administration “is using grant money and regulations to manipulate states into adopting the federal education standards.”

Obama, through his Race to the Top education initiative, convinced most states to adopt Common Core standards as a means of competing for billions in additional federal grant funding for education, though very few states actually received the funds.

The competitive Race to the Top grants, however, are only one of several ways the federal government is incentivizing states to implement the national learning standards. The U.S. Education Department has also awarded states a waiver from former president George W. Bush’s No Child Left Behind education standards – and the penalties for not making the grade – if they agree to move forward with Common Core.

  1. Not sure if common core is good or bad but there should be some standards in education.

  2. They are rather high standards. Parents fear low test scores of common core. In NYC student scores were lower two years in a row after common core.

The standards are not lower. In most schools this will be very difficult. RHS students can be compared to students in other states.

    1. common core means no reason to pay high taxes for quality schools systems , it will all be the same awful education

  3. So James, I am really asking this: I did not think that “common core” required homogeneous identical curriculum and text books. I thought it meant common basic classes required. So as long as the minimum standards and classes were met, it would mean no change.

Is it that I am wrong and it would require nationally mandated common text books, core classes, and materials? That is clearly the fear, but I did not think this was the case.

    1. thats what you are suppose to think , its just a left wing dialectic , for child indoctrination . Like Mao’s little red book , a bit more subtle.
I mean lets face the kids are already stupid enough and waste most of their days listening to propaganda ,like social studies in stead of history. Even math has become politicized, (the Math Wars ) like the old Soviet Union . Towns in Bergen because of some quality schools systems have rejected the concept . The Bergen Freeholders both Dems and Publicans passed a resolution against it .The only people supporting it are either people who dont know what its about or people making money off it like Jeb Bush and Pearson and we all know that Brogan of the BOE has gone to great lengths to push her crazy leftist agenda on Ridgewood , which is one of the reasons Lorenze left RHS and the schools have dropped in rank the last 15 years .

  4. Here is the website for math standards.

    https://www.corestandards.org/Math/Practice/

Compare the standard to your child’s math class. I see a match for my high schooler’s probability class. Maybe regular people don’t understand the standards.

  5. Teachers will have to do things differently. They do not like change. Neither do parents. They want kids to be taught the way that they were taught.
