Roselle Park NJ, Borough councilwoman Charlene Storey quits over the word ‘Christmas’ in tree lighting ceremony. The resignation was applauded by many in the Borough with residents commenting on Facebook ,”The squeaky wheel has gotten the grease too often in this country the last 25 years and I, along with millions, am tired of the American Culture being denigrated. Charlene has her priorities backwards – wasn’t she representing Roselle Park, not her atheist beliefs?” and other saying “Good Riddance Charlene …. You’re an absolute disgrace. Enjoy your 2 minutes of fame. She is EXACTLY what is wrong with America. She is an absolute filthy disgrace.”
Unfortunately for many of her detractors the Councilwoman rescinded her resignation from the council under an agreement with Mayor Carl Hokanson, the two officials announced. Hokanson will create a new committee on diversity in the borough and Storey will chair it and the new name of the event will remain in place.
Once again its seems the scourge of political correctness, coupled with weak willed cowardice has been allowed to trample on our local institutions . After all is not a menorah a menorah then a Christmas tree is a Christmas tree whether you celebrate those holidays or not ;It is what it is as they say .
What a hardcore creep this Councilwoman is. The mayor should have called a new election the second he had her resignation in hand. By now even barnacle – encrusted atheists know, Christmas and associated believers are perfectly compatible with our society and need not be irrationally feared and fought against and replaced with a godless secularism, which is itself a (misguided) faith system that we’ve been putting up with for 100 years or so out of an abundance of national patience. Alienate the people that ISIS adherents derogatorily refer to as “Nazarenes”, and you are doing the work of devil-guided ISIS.
Don’t kid yourself, James. We have our share of people in Ridgewood who if placed in a position of influence and if they were to get a clear shot at their goal would set themselves on fire if necessary to get rid of the star atop our Christmas tree, if not eliminate the tree and the lighting ceremony entirely.

Christmas is a part of growing up in America. It does not attempt to take anything away from others. It is an American and a Christian celebration. I happen to fit both categories of celebrants.
My Irish friend has an Oktoberfest every year. He loves a celebration too.
I haven’t been a practicing Christian for years. It was and still is a “Christmas Tree”. It’s not about the name by which it’s called, but joy it brings to all who enjoy it.
I celebrate Yule on the Winter Solstice and Christmas as well. I’m not resigning as the UnOfficial Witch because it’s not called a “Yule Tree!” FFS!

And we all remember how well the “holiday tree” with recycled garbage hanging on it in Van Nest park went.

9:08 Tracy, good point. You get credit for finding middle ground and avoiding outright profanity. Like SNAFU, BOHICA, etc. But wow, that acronym FFS is a new one on this commenter. Can’t remember the last time the full-length phrase was thrown out in mixed company–it’s so horrid it is actually funny, for its shock value at least. Think of Michael Myers saying it with a Scottish accent. Saint Pete must look down his nose at it though–cuts a little too close to the bone for his tastes. Happy to have retired it, frankly, for fear of the consequences in the confessional!
Michael Myers does have the advantage with the Scottish accent. However, he has nothing on the parrot on YouTube. He has the acronym and the Scottish accent. I’ve considered adopting one simply for that reason. 🙂
