Watchung NJ, Anthony Volpe, a New Jersey native, achieved a significant milestone in his rookie season with the New York Yankees by being awarded the American League Gold Glove at shortstop. This honor is remarkable, as he became one of only 15 first-year MLB players ever to receive this prestigious fielding award. Here are some key highlights of his achievements:

  1. Historic Rookie Season: Anthony Volpe made history by becoming the first rookie in New York Yankees’ franchise history to achieve 20 or more home runs and 20 or more stolen bases in a single season. This 20-20 achievement is a remarkable feat for a rookie.
  2. Consistent Defensive Performance: While he faced some offensive fluctuations during the season, his defensive performance at shortstop remained notably consistent. There were initial concerns about his ability to maintain the position at shortstop, but he demonstrated his capability during his first season, dispelling doubts.
  3. Youngest Gold Glove Winner: Anthony Volpe set a new record as the youngest shortstop to win a Gold Glove, surpassing the previous record held by Alan Trammell in 1980. He achieved this honor at the age of 22 years and 156 days on the final day of the regular season.
  4. Durable Player: Anthony Volpe’s durability was noteworthy, as he participated in 157 games at shortstop during the season, making him one of the most active shortstops in MLB. This level of participation is especially remarkable on a team known for resting players and dealing with injuries.
  5. First Yankee Shortstop Since Jeter: He is the first Yankees shortstop to win a Gold Glove since the legendary Derek Jeter, who achieved this honor in 2010.
  6. Advanced Metrics: Despite having 17 errors at shortstop during the 2023 season, his advanced defensive metrics ranked him among the elite players. He had the second-highest defensive runs saved in the American League.

  1. Tries to hit too many homeruns. In fact, all of the Yankees do that. Not smart.

    1. 100%
Line drive singles and doubles. On base % is key w his speed.

  2. Players that, because of their superior speed/quickness/range compared to other players, manage to get their gloves on balls that the others fail to reach, are sometimes going to be charged with errors that those other players can’t legitimately be charged with. This must be why “advanced defensive metrics” have been devised, and why MLB is using them/encouraging their use. Volpe sounds like the kind of player these stats were intended to serve.

  3. Chicks dig the long ball
