Trenton NJ, Assembly Republican Leader Jon Bramnick criticized Democrat’s efforts to ruin the freelance , ‘gig economy’ after a local paper in his district was forced to eliminate its freelance program just days after Christmas in response to action taken by the state Department of Labor.

“These are community members who know the heartbeat of our towns and neighborhoods,” said Bramnick (R-Union).  “This is not their full-time job but they are committed to covering our community, whether keeping tabs on the town council or reviewing the newest play at the local theater.”

Bramnick noted that ride-sharing drivers, workers such as truckers, childcare workers, landscapers, hairdressers, musicians and others could all be at risk under a bill that has been speeding through the Legislature.

The legislation (S4204) changes how the government determines whether a worker is an employee or an independent contractor.  It would apply to all businesses within the state.Similar recent legislation failed miserably in California.
