THE RECORD

Bergen County’s tradition of home rule is costing taxpayers far too much money, County Executive Kathleen Donovan said Wednesday in championing an effort to consolidate services and share costs among its 70 municipalities.

“Why do we have so many freaking levels of government?” she asked during a 90-minute interview with The Record editorial board. “I’ve been in government a long time, and it makes no sense to me.”

On the eve of her annual state of the county address, Donovan said she will press this year to continue to reduce costs through such programs as the county emergency dispatch system and bulk purchases. As an example, she cited an agreement reached late last year to have the Bergen County police patrol the northern part of Teterboro.

>New Jersey stalls in efforts to offer online access to State Spending data

New Jersey ranks in the middle among the states in providing online access to government spending data, according to an annual report issued Wednesday by the Public Interest Research Group.

New Jersey got a C-plus, one of 14 “emerging states” to be assigned C-range grades. Twenty-two states got higher scores than New Jersey’s 78, including seven with high enough scores to get A or A-minus grades.  (Symons, Gannett)

Death by a thousand cuts: The crisis in government services

Despite major savings from last year’s pension and health benefits overhaul, New Jersey’s state, county, and municipal governments and school districts will be taking in $13 billion less than they need to maintain services at current levels five years from now, according to a study by a blue-ribbon panel of former state officials and foundation leaders conducted for the Council of New Jersey Grantmakers.  (Magyar, NJ Spotlight)

On March 13, local officials officially unveiled the Tri-Boro shuttle, a free bus service that ferries commuters from the Ridgewood Train Station to several corporations in Montvale, Woodcliff Lake and Park Ridge.

Between pickups, which include a lunchtime route, the bus will be used to help seniors and the disabled. They can call 201-368-5955, which is printed on the side of the bus, for assistance.

Standing in front of one of the new buses delivered by the county, officials emphasized the service’s flexibility, saying they hoped to expand the two-bus, 16-passenger fleet if the need is there.

“I think it’s a home run,” said Bergen County Executive Kathleen Donovan.

>Out of ‘hobby’ class, drones lifting off for personal, commercial use
By Patrick Hruby-The Washington Times Wednesday, March 14, 2011

Jordi Munoz had no training. Scant schooling. Little money. He also had a video-game console and nothing else to do.

So he built his own drone.

A Mexican native, Mr. Munoz married an American citizen and moved to Riverside,Calif., in 2007. While waiting for his green card, the 21-year-old was marooned in his apartment, unable to work, attend school or obtain a driver’s license.

On the other hand, he had an Internet connection. A Nintendo Wii. A radio-controlled toy helicopter his mother had given him to help kill time.

Highway bill would send $1.5 billion in funding to New Jersey

New Jersey would get the highest public transportation funding ever — $519 million per year — under the federal highway bill passed by the Senate on Wednesday.

People who take public transportation to work and seniors also would benefit from the bill.
But New Jersey would get less money for road projects than in 2011. New Jersey would get $988 million, which is a 4.6 percent decrease from the $1.04 billion it received last year. Overall, New Jersey would get $1.5 billion for transportation needs.  (Herman, Gannett)

‘No Knock’ List Would Keep Away Solicitors
March 14, 2012 11:21 AM

ROYAL OAK (WWJ) – After the murder of an 80-year-old woman in her home last fall, the City of Royal Oak is looking into possibly adopting a so-called community “no knock” list in an attempt to tighten the limits on door-to-door solicitors.

WWJ Newsradio 950 spoke with Royal Oak City Attorney Dave Gillam.

“A homeowner would have the ability to have their name and address put on that list. And, essentially, that would make it illegal or unlawful for a solicitor to approach someone at that address for commercial purposes,” Gilliam said.

Nancy Dailey was murdered in her house on November 20, allegedly by two parolees who authorities said did lawn work for her prior to the murder.

>An Evening For All Patriotic Americans

>An Evening For All Patriotic Americans
SueT
3:54 PM

Evnings come and evenings go, but Tuesday March  13, 2012 in Wyckoff, NJ was a special one, indeed. The  souls of the departed at Gettysburg  could well have been in attendance.

You could have heard a pin drop as, Trevor Loudon, of internatioonal politcal fame, lecturer and author confidently outlined a historical scenario which could rival all but those who have already left their marks on the pages of history.

Sitting in rapt attention were your neighbors and mine hanging on every word and phrase, as Mr. Loudon wove a tapestry of modern events into a wall hanging of awsome significance, fact by fact, and happening by happening until  all wondered, ” How can he remember all those names, dates and events?” This was accomplished with but one small written quote, in a presentation of one hour and a half! If we had been a chosen jury, we could not have helped but  buy into his case for political contrivances under a cloak of constitutionality. Yes Mother, indeed there is a plot a foot!

We drove verbally through all the years of Barack Obama’s life, from his childhood until present day, clearly touching on all those who influenced his life intellectually, philosophically, sociologically and politically, thereby molding the man we now call our president. I am sure many of you remeber the old expression, ” You are judged by the company you keep!’ That says it all!

Therefore, I am truly sorry that we could not fill a stadium for this event. In turn , I highly recommend buying his latest book titled, ” Barack Obama and the Enemies Within.”  This is a true story that needs to be told to all freedom loving Americans, regardless of political party or level of education.

Thank you West Bergen Tea Party for sponsoring this event and ” Thank You” Trevor Loudon for your fact filled history lesson which we shall never forget.

>Major US Airport To Evict TSA Screeners

>Major US Airport To Evict TSA Screeners
Orlando Sanford International could prompt stampede of other opt-outs
Paul Joseph Watson
Infowars.com
Wednesday, March 14, 2012

One of America’s busiest airports, Orlando Sanford International, has announced it will opt out of using TSA workers to screen passengers, a move which threatens the highly unpopular federal agency’s role in other airports across the nation.

“The president of the airport said Tuesday that he would apply again to use private operators to screen passengers, using federal standards and oversight,” reports the Miami Herald.

With Sanford International having originally been prevented by the TSA from opting out back in November 2010 when the federal agency froze the ability for airports to use their own private screeners, a law passed by the Senate last month forces the TSA to reconsider applications.

>Encyclopaedia Britannica To End Print Editions

>Encyclopaedia Britannica To End Print Editions
March 13, 2012 9:07 PM

CHICAGO (AP) – Encyclopaedia Britannica Inc. said Tuesday that it will stop publishing print editions of its flagship encyclopedia for the first time since the sets were originally published more than 200 years ago.

The book-form of Encyclopaedia Britannica has been in print since it was first published in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1768. It will stop being available when the current stock runs out, the company said. The  Chicago-based company will continue to offer digital versions of the encyclopedia.

Officials said the end of the printed, 32-volume set has been foreseen for some time.

“This has nothing to do with Wikipedia or Google,” Encyclopaedia Britannica Inc. President Jorge Cauz said. “This has to do with the fact that now Britannica sells its digital products to a large number of people.”

>Bergen C-PAC Endorses Ridgewood Attorney John Ginty  and Margaret ” Peg” Watkins former mayor of River Edge for Bergen County Republican Freeholder

Conservative PAC on behalf of the trustees and dues paying members of Bergen C PAC announced the endorsement of John Ginty and Margaret ” Peg” Watkins for freeholder in the upcoming Bergen County Republican Organization Convention on March 15.

“With an impressive background in the military and as an attorney, John Ginty has been a thoroughbred conservative for years and is extraordinarily qualified to articulate and implement conservative philosophy that is greatly needed in Bergen County governance,” said  Paul Duggan, one of the Bergen C Pac founders

Margaret “Peg” Watkins, the former mayor of River Edge, brings years of integrity, experience and loyalty to the party base, and will add a much needed gravitas to the party image that has been lacking of late, added Duggan.

Frederick Goetz, a councilman from  Washington Township did not respond to Bergen C PAC’s  invitation.

“One of the prerequisites for running as a candidate on a county level is the willingness to communicate your desire to hold this office,” said Duggan.

Although Freeholder Hermansen did attend the C-PAC  forum, ”we have serious issues regarding the freeholder’s voting record on the disastrous pay to play issue and, his associations with the liberal group Bergen GrassRoots. Hermansen’s advocacy for a liberal position that stifles free speech through campaign donations is detrimental to our party.”

In addition, “Hermansen’s votes to appoint prominent liberal Democrats to various positions within the Bergen County government, in particular his vote to approve the ultra liberal union lawyer Robert Garrison to the Bergen County Improvement Authority.”

“Bergen C-PAC believes that all elected Bergen County Republican officials must stand for Republican values and represent the interests of the grassroots. To our great dismay, a handful of elected officials have even allowed the liberal Bergen Grassroots and Bergen Record to define and derail the Republican agenda, even giving way to articles in the Record detailing private meetings and petty disputes within our party. That must be stopped!,” added Duggan.

“The only way to change this deplorable situation within the BCRO is to nominate John Ginty and Margaret “Peg” Watkins.

“These are seasoned, serious, wise, and loyal Republicans whom we can trust.  By nominating Ginty and  Watkins Unity Ticket,  Republicans  will have their voices heard in One Bergen Plaza again,” said  Duggan.

>Thursday is ‘Poolmageddon’ for trial lawyers

>Thursday is ‘Poolmageddon’ for trial lawyers

President Obama’s Department of Justice — led by Attorney General Eric Holder — has found a new way to make the Americans with Disabilities Act pay off for Democratic trial lawyer campaign donors.

Since the ADA first became law in 1990, the DOJ has been issuing “guidelines” that businesses must follow to comply with a multitude of the nation’s civil rights laws.

For example, if a restaurant bathroom has a light switch that is 52 inches above the floor, then that business is in compliance. But if the light switch is 53 inches above the floor, than the restaurant owner is a civil rights violator subject to fines from the government and liable for civil damages from any disabled individual who ever used the bathroom.

The DOJ has been issuing a growing wave of such guidelines over the years, reaching an ever larger portion of business activities. In September 2010, the DOJ issued guidelines for “recreational facilities,” including a new rule that all public access swimming pools must provide a lift capable of moving disabled patrons from their wheelchairs into the water.

New Jersey in top five most expensive states for renting
New Jersey is the fourth most expensive place in the nation to rent a two bedroom apartment, behind only Hawaii, Washington, D.C., and California, according to a national report released Tuesday by the National Low Income Housing Coalition.
A family must earn an hourly wage of $25.04 in order afford to rent in New Jersey, where more than a third of residents rent a house or apartment. In 2011, New Jersey ranked in the top five and the new status represents an 18 percent increase over a five year period.  (Hester, New Jersey Newsroom)
