Sen. Bateman proposes bill to let voters decide if N.J. should legalize same-sex marriage
Senator Christopher “Kip” Bateman (R-Somerset) announced Thursday that he has introduced a resolution that would, if approved by the Legislature and voters would amend the state Constitution to permit same-sex marriage in New Jersey.
The resolution (SCR-88) is supported by Gov. Chris Christie but opposed by the Democrats who control the Legislature. Senate President Steve Sweeney (D-Gloucester) has declared the type of legislation proposed by Bateman will not be considered.
Instead, the Democrats are preparing to approve legislation next week that would legalize same-sex marriage in the state. Christie has stated he will not approve the measure. (Hester, New Jersey Newsroom)
It’s not the most ideal site, but where else would you put Village Hall. Habernickel? Schedler? Old Village Ford site?
I wonder how many know what VH site used to be (Elks Club)- it was an old building in bad shape- had not been maintained for years. But Vill badly needed room and so bought it way back, and Elks then built their current (now pretty old) building nearby on Maple.
Village “Hall” back then was on Hudson Street in a rabbit warren of offices built around what was (at the time) main firehouse there. All those were torn down long time ago. A “hall” it was not- more a labyrinth!
Current VH site was always prone to water though. As others have noted, for years the lower level was police and records (like health dept etc). Many were lost back in Floyd.
Keith was on the police force during some of that era in a variety of positions. No Vill Mgr at all back then until about 1970– elected Commissioners with one also appointed as Mayor by the others.
I agree best use of downstairs is public meeting spaces. As others have noted, current plan is likely best poss solution to what has been a problem for a long time – given keeping the site as VH.

Intended as a forum for education discussion, Tuesday’s school community meeting took on the feel of a political roundtable as teacher topics sometimes turned into Democrat-Republican debates.
Hosted by Superintendent of Schools Daniel Fishbein and the Board of Education, the open session was meant to touch on education issues like teacher tenure reform, charter schools, vouchers and school funding and state aid. While useful comments and insight were offered to more than 100 residents in attendance, the guest speakers often used the “P” word.
“I don’t want to make this too political, but it really is political,” said Assemblyman David Russo (R-Midland Park) as he and Assemblyman Scott Rumana (R-Wayne) spent most of the meeting tackling the tenure reform debate.

Following the announced “accommodations” from the White House for religious organizations whose beliefs preclude them from offering birth control, Richard Land, president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, had some tough words for President Obama.
According to Land, the adjustment in the mandate requiring all employers — including religious organizations — to provide birth control is “a distinction without a difference.”
“My initial reaction is: How dumb does he think we are?” Land wondered in an interview with The Daily Caller. “Does he think when he puts lip stick on a pig, that we don’t understand that it is still a pig?”

The late Thomas Lawson Hawkins, a Glen Rock native and decorated member of the famed World War II Tuskegee Airmen, has been selected for induction in the Ridgewood High School (RHS) Distinguished Alumni Wall of Fame. Flight Officer Hawkins was killed in the line of duty in Italy on March 7, 1945.
Glen Rock Borough Historian Sue Tryforos nominated Hawkins for the honor last year, after extensively researching his service with the famed squadron of African-American fliers for an article that appeared in the Glen Rock Gazette in January 2011. Tryforos was notified of his selection by the RHS administration in January.
Born in 1923 in Springfield, Mass., Hawkins moved to Glen Rock with parents William and Rebecca as a young child. The family resided in homes on Hamilton Avenue and Broad Street before settling on Dean Street by 1941.

When New Jersey lawmakers passed a tough anti-bullying law in response to the suicide of Ridgewood resident Tyler Clementi, it seemed like a good idea. Having a set of policies and procedures in place to handle incidents of harassment, intimidation or bullying (HIB) among children is a good idea — in theory.
Proposed ban on credit checks in hiring meets resistance from employers
A proposed ban on employers checking the credit records of current or prospective employees met broad resistance from a range of employer groups today.
The Senate Labor Committee advanced a bill, S-455, that would bar the practice, with exemptions if credit history is required as a qualification for a job, such as a financial management position.
Stefanie Riehl, an assistant vice president with the New Jersey Business & Industry Association, said the Legislature should wait until the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission issues a decision regarding credit checks, which it has been reviewing since 2010. (Kitcheman, NJBIZ)
The state has shaved tens of millions of dollars off its unemployment insurance tab to the federal government because of a crackdown on fraud.
The Department of Labor said it’s nabbing each week an average of 2,000 people who return to work but continue to collect benefits. The anti-fraud initiative is expected to save more than $100 million in its first year. Some $60 million in savings had been realized by Dec. 31.
“The program involves tapping the resources of the state and national New Hire databases and cross-matching the names of people getting jobs to our unemployment insurance rolls,” Labor Deputy Commissioner Aaron Fichtner said. (Delli Santi, Associated Press)

Eleven US EPA unions representing over 7000 environmental and public health professionals are calling for a moratorium on fluoridation.
The CDC reports that 225 less communities adjusted for fluoride between 2006 and 2008. About 100 US and Canadian communities rejected fluoridation since 2008.
In Nebraska, 53 out of 66 towns voted not to fluoridate in 2008 and 2010, reports the PEW Foundation.
Tennessee, once 99% fluoridated, is now down in the low 90’s, according to the American Dental Association News.

Several weeks ago I “congratulated” the citizens of this great land on their having defeated the SOPA(Stop On Line Piracy Act ) in the House, and the PIPA (Protect Intellectual Property Act ) in the Senate.Through their out cries, along with industry leaders, these pieces of legislation were put on the back burner and sent back to committees for further review. Some signers even spoke up against what they had been a part of. They had no idea of the loop holes that were contained in what appeared to be merely a “protective arm from Internet piracy” supplied by the federal government. Hmm, sounds good, doesn’t it? Well, the doors to revision are now open and the Senate is currently holding secret meetings on the subject, under the careful tutelage of Democrat Harry Reid himself, and other big government pundits. Is it time for Americans to step up to the plate again?
Meanwhile, a paradigm of societal change reigns supreme in the halls of government. How then, can the people begin to understand what is taking place before their very eyes, and behind the scenes? Challenges to our way of life are being spawned daily. Extreme ideologues from both sides of the aisle are creating and supporting “big government legislation” daily. In turn, the president issues “executive orders” regularly, consistently by passing the congress, while the constitution lies dormant in its confines.
Let’s, for example, take the Internet once again, our marvelous vehicle for the instant acquisition of knowledge from every conceivable place on the planet, including from friends and neighbors.
Now, according to reliable Washington sources, the Democrats in the Senate are pushing for another Internet Control Bill. This will be labeled as ” New Cyber Security Bill.” Again, another reasonable and timely measure is being worked on. If there were problems with the content of the previous bills, ” What were they?” Why are the discussions behind closed doors.
Now, to add another dimension to all of this, one must look further to the United Nations, of all places.Go to the UN website and put in IGF ( Internet Governance Forum ) started in 2006, with forums which are currently meeting around the world. The latest yearly get together took place in the United States, at the Georgetown University Law Center. Representatives from around the world are creating the grand utopian design for the “Internet,” under the governing body of the United nations. How timely is our legislation? After all, Rome was not built in a day, either. Now, read this plan for yourself.
So, clearly it is time to contact your representatives, in both the House and Senate, and watch for the “Internet Cyber Security Bills” regularly, and hold their feet to the fire. Accountability is the name of the game!
