“The (The Villadom Times) publisher appears to have been involved in only one minor political dust-up, when Democratic Bergen County Executive candidate Dennis McNerney in 2002 called for an investigation of his Republican opponent’s periodic column in the Villadom. McNerney contended that then state Sen. Henry P. McNamara should have disclosed the column, called Straight Talk, as an in-kind contribution from the Vierheiligs.”
So Boyd Loving was right on the money when he commented that Paul Aronsohn’s monthly column in The Ridgewood News may be a violation of NJ State Election Commission Laws and also unethical.
Sounds like the Ridgewood News might have the same sort of dust-up if they keep on with the mayor’s monthly PR column.
Running foul of election laws is the name of the game, as in the Mike Sedon anonymous email.

Yes, thank you PJ, and please bear in mind that if for whatever reason you stop providing this local service, not only will the sheer quantity of local public discourse immediately plummet, but its tenor and quality will also take a big hit. This is so in no small part because others whose personal political stock in trade appears to be in gratuitous humiliation and vilification of well-meaning colleagues and private citizens will be emboldened to increase the frequency and scale of their misbehavior.
With all the difficulties you can’t avoid, and must therefore endure, as a modern digital publisher of smallish size, you deserve to be recognized for your inspiring creativity, civic-mindedness, and clear devotion to essential Western values such as freedom of conscience, speech and association, virtuous self-government based on sound morality and a decent respect for the interests of one’s neighbors, and a healthy American skepticism when it comes to the stated, implied, or hidden motivations of elected and appointive government actors at all levels.
Local officeholders and policymakers, and municipal managers, employees, appointees, board members and volunteers know, or at least should know, that when it comes down to brass tacks, TRB.com exists purely for the long-term benefit of the Village, its citizens, its taxpayers, and other residents. Any solicited or unsolicited criticism that comes their way from these parts or at public meetings is meant not for the sake of negativity or to drag anyone down, but to further the best interests of the village as they are perceived in good faith by your very neighbors. Because this fact may not be readily apparent when current issues are being hotly discussed, or when commenters insist on exercising their right (within reason) to remain anonymous, it should not go unmentioned for very long, and it ought to be called to mind by all local actors on a regular basis so that as few people as possible end up with their respective noses out of joint when the dust settles. (How’s that for a public civility strategy, Mr. Mayor?)

The past four years have taken Ridgewood native Tyler Welence throughout the western hemisphere, but no matter where he’s gone, he has always been playing baseball.
The 2011 Ridgewood High School graduate made his latest mark on the diamond last fall playing shortstop for McGill University in Montreal, which won the Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association National Championship.
“This was the first time I was ever part of a team that ended up winning the highest honor possible, and the feeling was so foreign to me after we won, the sense of accomplishment didn’t set in for a few hours,” Welence said earlier this week.
For his performance during the Redmen’s run, Welence earned the tournament MVP.
“Honestly, I always just try my best to help the team win, whatever that means doing,” he said. “I was very happy I was able to play a role in getting our team the title, but it was truly a full team effort.”
Welence exhibited the same sort of team-first attitude in his years at RHS.

New Jersey’s education commissioner will review alleged cases of test-question leaks on the Internet to see if the state’s contractors violated student privacy when monitoring exam discussions online, officials said Thursday at an Assembly hearing.
The announcement follows days of public outrage over reports that the Pearson testing company scanned students’ comments and reported question leaks to the state Department of Education in what some people believe was a violation of student privacy.
At the hearing, legislators grilled education officials about the monitoring.
“I just find this to be unacceptable, to say we should monitor the social media of every student in New Jersey and to delegate it to a third party we don’t control,” said Assemblyman Patrick Diegnan Jr., D-Middlesex, chairman of the education committee.
He added, “I think the response is disproportionate to find two or three questions.”
But education officials continued to defend the actions Thursday at a hearing before the Assembly Education Committee.

With the completion of public comment and attorney summations, members of the Ridgewood Planning Board were given the chance to weigh in on the proposed master plan amendment at a deliberation meeting on Tuesday night.
Many of the board members stated their belief that some form of multifamily housing downtown would benefit the village, while opinions diverged on subtopics such as density, building height, traffic and impact on the school system.
Planning Board Chairman Charles Nalbantian began with his observation that higher-density, multifamily housing in and around the Central Business District (CBD) would be good for Ridgewood and that an amendment of some kind to the housing element of the master plan is timely due to the under-utilization of the chosen sites.
However, he noted that “the devil is always in the details,” and while he believes the amendment reflects appropriate use, there are reasonable questions regarding many of the smaller issues – height, affordable housing and density chief among them – that form the larger picture.

Here’s some fuel for the fire. Does anyone else notice that there is rarely any media coverage about discrimination of any other group that even comes close to the hype provided for the race-baiters that soak up the camera and $$$ today? Pick any “oppressed” group. I’m no historian, but did any of these groups destroy, on a continuous basis, their own communities with riots, fire and other illegal activities? And at the same time have their own media darlings who benefitted as a result. It appears that the groups who experienced such a plight improved themselves and their peers, or are in the process of this. There are already laws on the books. At what point is society no longer to blame and personal responsibility becomes necessary?? This is a genuine question, so looking forward to informative responses rather than personal attacks. I don’t like Starbucks coffee either, but perhaps it succeeded with initiating productive dialogue by the people rather than the media.

Bergen County burglary task force caps 6-month investigation with five arrests

A Bergen County task force has solved more than 40 burglaries in Bergen and Monmouth counties after a six-month investigation, according to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office.
Authorities said three different groups of suspects are responsible for the crimes. Five men were arrested in February and officials recovered hundreds of suspected stolen proceeds, including guns, jewelry, electronics, collectables, antique coins, cellphones and a safe.
“This is one of the largest recoveries of stolen proceeds in recent years,” Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said in a news release.
So far, the men have been linked to 42 residential burglaries, including ones in Allendale, Englewood, Franklin Lakes, Fairfield, Fair Lawn, Hillsdale, Mahwah, Nutley, Oakland, Oceanport, Old Tappan, Parsippany, Pearl River, N.Y., Ridgewood, River Edge, Saddle River, Upper Saddle River, Tinton Falls, Totowa, Verona, Waldwick, Washington Township and Woodcliff Lake.
More charges are anticipated as detectives try to find the owners of the recovered items, the release said.

From suburban Chicago, another tale of teens being treated like criminals for sharing sexually oriented photos with each other. Four students at Ridgewood High School, in the suburb of Norridge, now face possible charges for “dissemination of harmful material to a minor,” police said. Those charged include two girls, 15 and 17, who sent nude photos of themselves via Snapchat and two male teens who received the photos and forwarded them to others. Another student overheard classmates discussing it and ratted them out to school officials, who ratted them out to the police.
Why the sex lives of teens should be subject to school discipline is suspect enough, but it’s extra perplexing what interest the government has in such matters. We’re talking about teens using private phones and communications platforms to exchange photos. It may not be the most wise move to send nude selfies to your crush, but criminal? Surely police resources could be used in better ways?
