HOLMDEL — Republican U.S. Senate candidate Steve Lonegan says his campaign is ‘cresting’ and he will beat Democrat Cory Booker.

Lonegan told The Associated Press after an event Sunday that his campaign isn’t a longshot and he expects to win Wednesday. The former Bogota mayor also says he stands by his decision to fire Rick Shaftan, a high-ranking adviser who bashed Booker in a profane interview and questioned his sexuality. (The Associated Press)

Obamacare enrollees become urban legend
BY PATRICIA BORNS AND DANIEL CHANG
Will the Floridians who have enrolled for Obamacare please stand up?
Nearly two weeks after the federal government launched the online Health Insurance Marketplace at HealthCare.gov, individuals who have successfully used the choked-up website to enroll for a subsidized health insurance plan have reached a status akin to urban legend: Everyone has heard of them, but very few people have actually met one.
The Miami Herald searched high and low for individuals who completed enrollment for a subsidized health plan through the marketplace, also called an exchange, launched by the federal government on Oct. 1 in 36 states, including Florida.
The Herald solicited readers for stories of enrollees online and in the newspaper, and received a fair number of responses reflecting various degrees of success with HealthCare.gov, which has been plagued by technical problems that federal officials attribute to an overwhelming number of people trying to access the website at once.
A keystone of the federal healthcare reform law known the Affordable Care Act, the exchange is intended to provide affordable, comprehensive health insurance for the millions of Americans who do not have coverage.
As Cory Booker looks set to win the junior Senate seat in New Jersey Wednesday, his supposed neighbors in Newark say Mayor Booker doesn’t live in the Gateway City.
Multiple residents of Newark told The Daily Caller that the longtime mayor doesn’t live at any of the addresses he has claimed as home. The mayor is believed to live in New York even though he is registered to run for New Jersey’s special senate election.
Booker, who filed to run for the U.S. Senate from a P.O. Box in Newark, is registered to vote at 435 Hawthorne Avenue but his next door neighbors told this reporter and filmmaker Joel Gilbert on camera that they haven’t seen Booker in years and that he doesn’t live there.

Oh, and By the Way, Obama’s Approval Rating Down to 37
By Andrew C. McCarthy
October 9, 2013 9:54 AM
Talk about burying the lede. Seven paragraphs into a report it headlines “Poll: GOP Gets The Blame In Shutdown,” which purports to show how lopsidedly an angry public has come down against Republicans over the so-called shutdown of the government, the Associated Press grudgingly drops this little detail:
Most Americans disapprove of the way Obama is handling his job, the poll suggests, with 53 percent unhappy with his performance and 37 percent approving of it.
In fact, the spin notwithstanding, the poll is full of bad news for the administration. While the AP/GfK poll finds that 62 percent blame Republicans for the shutdown, “about half” blame Obama and congressional Democrats. Eighty percent of respondents “felt no personal impact from the shutdown” (even though 68 perecnt say it’s “a major problem for the country”). Fifty-two percent say Obama is not doing enough to cooperate with Republicans.

Chris Christie Slams Congress
by Lloyd Grove Oct 14, 2013 5:45 AM EDT
The compromise-friendly New Jersey governor tells Lloyd Grove he thinks Washington— including his own party—has failed at its only job: keep the government running.
“It’s ridiculous,” Chris Christie said.
New Jersey’s blunt-spoken, bipartisanly-inclined Republican governor was discussing the ongoing federal shutdown and debt ceiling crisis plaguing the nation’s capital. “You get hired to do a job. Do your job!” he said. “There are too many people down here who spend all their time pontificating rather than working. And that applies to both parties. I don’t have patience for that.”
The 51-year-old Christie—who many hope will launch a presidential campaign once he gets past what is widely expected to be an easy reelection on Nov. 5—was making a rare visit to Washington, D.C. Technically, however, he was in the sovereign nation of Italy, having been selected to receive a Points of Light voluntarism award during a black-tie dinner Friday at the Italian Embassy. “My mother”—the late Sondra Grasso, a descendant of Sicilians and a Democrat to boot—“would always be happy to have me spend any time in Italy,” he quipped.
Earlier in the day, during a meeting with the editorial board of The Philadelphia Inquirer, Christie had suggested that the dysfunction in Washington drives him to thoughts of suicide: “If I was in the Senate right now, I’d kill myself.”
As with a previous reference to self-murder back in 2011, when he repeatedly denied interest in running for the White House, he was kidding. “I was being dramatic to make a point—that it’s a waste of time,” Christie said on Friday night, this time explaining his lack of interest in being a legislator. “You know me. I’m not into wasting time. That’s what I meant by the comment.”
He added: “You send people down here to run the government, not to shut it down. And everybody’s failed.

Steve Lonegan’s Passion fueled by challenges

Some people can point to a moment when their life changed and they embarked on a new path. For Steve Lonegan, the conservative Republican running for U.S. Senate in Wednesday’s special election, that moment arrived about two years after he graduated from college.
It was 1982. Lonegan was legally blind — a final diagnosis after years of deteriorating vision from retinitis pigmentosa, a hereditary eye condition he had been battling since he was 16.
He could not find a job, he said. His only income was a Social Security disability check. He felt like a failure — or, as he described his predicament recently, “trapped” in “the entitlement state.”
So, he said, he canceled his disability checks.
What may seem reckless and irresponsible to some was, to Lonegan, a sign of personal independence. It was also a sign of things to come.
Lonegan eventually jumped into politics and became a torchbearer for the anti-government Tea Party movement. And after being dismissed over the summer as a maverick conservative who never won elective office outside tiny Bogota, where he served three terms as mayor, he has emerged in recent days as a serious opponent to Cory Booker, the Democratic mayor of Newark. Booker’s 30-point lead in August has shrunk to around 12 points, according to several recent polls. (Kelly/The Record)

WASHINGTON – Thousands of people converged on the World War II Memorial on the National Mall on Sunday morning and tore down the barricades blocking it off, protesting the closure of the memorial during the federal government shutdown.
THIS PILE OF BARRY-CADES IS THE SHOT OF THE DAY! We would like to thank our readers, David & Jennifer!
Beginning at about 9:30 a.m., Sens. Mike Lee, R-Utah, and Ted Cruz, R-Texas, as well as former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, were among the luminaries in a crowd that chanted “Tear down these walls!” and sang “God Bless America” as well as other patriotic songs as they entered the memorial, which has been closed since the government shutdown that began Oct. 1.
