New Jersey’s 2002 smart-gun law could take effect soon, limit supply

The Recor
For years, they’ve existed only in science fiction and the archives of the New Jersey Legislature: handguns that fire only in the grip of an authorized user.
And yet these so-called smart guns soon could be the only kind sold legally in New Jersey under a state law that has languished on the books for a decade.
The law, which requires the state’s gun dealers to exclusively sell smart guns within three years after the first one hits the market, has been largely forgotten since the Legislature adopted it in 2002. But it could be dusted off as early as this year as technology finally catches up to the vision of lawmakers at a time when the debate over gun control is more combative and divisive than at any time in recent history.
After years of stalled and inconclusive research — hampered in part by political resistance from groups like the National Rifle Association — a German company called Armatix says it will introduce the first gun equipped with a user-recognition system within 45 days.
It is unclear whether that model, which will fire only within range of a sensor embedded in a wristwatch, will trigger the New Jersey regulations. But advocates predict that the first sale is likely to create a domino effect as other companies and publicly funded groups — including one at the New Jersey Institute of Technology — are spurred to bring their own prototypes to the market.
National Take Back Prescription Drug Day Ridgewood Police Department 10AM to 2PM .Safely dispose of prescription medications on October 26, 2013 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Ridgewood Police Department. For other locations, or to obtain more information, please visit the Drug Enforcement Agency’s website https://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/drug_disposal/takeback/index.html
On October 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Ridgewood Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public its seventh opportunity in three years to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. Bring your medications for disposal to the Ridgewood the Police station at 131 North maple Ave. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.
Last April, Americans turned in 371 tons (over 742,000 pounds) of prescription drugs at over 5,800 sites operated by the DEA and its thousands of state and local law enforcement partners. In its six previous Take Back events, DEA and its partners took in over 2.8 million pounds—more than 1,400 tons—of pills.
This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards.

The glitch-plagued Obamacare rollout might be just the beginning: A series of potential technology problems could thwart the Obama administration’s goal of getting 7 million people enrolled in the new exchanges by the end of March.
Millions of people have already encountered error messages, delays, crashes and stuck accounts. Technology experts and Obamacare backers worry that each step ahead in the process — filling out applications, checking on subsidies and selecting a health insurance plan — creates a potential technology choke point. And that doesn’t even count any additional chaos when people try to use their new health insurance come January.
45 Pounds of Honey Harvested from The Valley Hospital’s Honeybee Hives in Paramus
The Valley Hospital hosted a demonstration of the honey harvesting process on Tuesday, September 24.
To see all the photographs from the event, please visit Valley’s Facebook page at Facebook.com/ValleyHospital.
The Valley Hospital has harvested the first batch of honey from the honey bee hives located on the roof of the hospital’s Luckow Pavilion in Paramus. About 45 pounds of golden honey were harvested from the hives. This first batch will be offered to employees and used by Valley Dining.
The honeybees arrived at Valley’s Luckow Pavilion on May 14. Valley was the first hospital in New Jersey to have rooftop hives installed as part of a growing trend in urban and suburban beekeeping. Other locations with rooftop hives include the Hyatt Regency in Jersey City and other hotels, supermarkets, and residences.
Beekeeping may sound like an odd endeavor for a hospital to become involved with but it is actually a natural extension of Valley’s other efforts to “go green” and support locally produced food. In 2010 Valley signed the Healthy Food in Health Care Pledge, which calls for hospitals to use more locally grown food, work with vendors to obtain products free of pesticides and hormones, purchase more organic foods, educate the community about nutritious and ‘’socially just” foods, minimize or reuse food waste, use ecologically protective food packaging and support humane agriculture systems. Initiatives to date conducted in support of the pledge include buying local produce from Catalpa Ridge farm in Sussex County, the hospital’s commitment to buying cage-free eggs, promoting “Meatless Monday” and a partnership with the community supported agriculture program offered by Hesperides Organica, a farm in Warwick, N.Y.
“We have always been big supporters of locally produced food and what could be more local that producing your own honey?” said Dawn Cascio, Director of Food and Nutrition Services for Valley Dining. “We also like the idea of supporting the declining honey bee population while enhancing our community’s gardens, foliage, and trees.”
In fact, Paramus’ newest residents will help pollinate a 2-mile radius around the Luckow Pavilion, increasing the yield of flowers, fruits and vegetables over an 8,700-acre area.
Concerned about their sting? Not to worry. “Honeybees are very docile and rarely sting except by accident or in defense of a beehive, because use of its stinger is lethal to a honeybee,” said Eric Hanan, Co-Founder of Bee Bold Apiaries, which supplied and will maintain the honeybee hives for Valley. “Honeybees are not aggressive and are not interested in us or our backyard barbecues or drinks.”
“The New Jersey Department of Agriculture promotes and encourages urban bee keeping,” Cascio said. “We want to do all we can to be as “green” as possible to the environment.”

Gobble tov! American Jews ready for Thanksgivukkah
By LEANNE ITALIE
NEW YORK (AP) — It’s a turkey. It’s a menorah. It’s Thanksgivukkah!
An extremely rare convergence this year of Thanksgiving and the start of Hanukkah has created a frenzy of Talmudic proportions.
There’s the number crunching: The last time it happened was 1888, or at least the last time since Thanksgiving was declared a federal holiday by President Lincoln, and the next time may have Jews lighting their candles from spaceships 79,043 years from now, by one calculation.
There’s the commerce: A 9-year-old New York boy invented the “Menurkey” and raised more than $48,000 on Kickstarter for his already trademarked, Turkey-shaped menorah. Woodstock-inspired T-shirts have a turkey perched on the neck of a guitar and implore “8 Days of Light, Liberty & Latkes.” The creators nabbed the trademark to “Thanksgivukkah.”
Bergen County Sheriiff’s Gold Star Program held in Ridgewood
Ridgewood NJ, Over 80 Seniors and special needs children participated in this cooperative program between the County Sheriff’s Department and Ridgewood
The Gold Star Program is a lifesaving initiative for seniors over the age of 65 and individuals with special needs regardless of their age. The Gold Star Program provides first responders with vital medical information in the event of an emergency or when an individual is not able to communicate due to various disabilities.
The participating individuals are issued a photo identification card that corresponds to a personal file maintained by Bergen County Sheriff’s Office 24-Hour Operations Unit. This file includes family and emergency contacts, current and prior medical conditions, and physician’s contact information. If the cardholder ever becomes incapacitated during an emergency, the BCSO’s Operations Unit can provide emergency contact information to first responders. The Gold Star Identification Card can also be used as an additional official means of picture identification.
Reader says Glen Rock is giving our Deputy Mayor lip service on the municipal garage project
“But at its meeting Wednesday night, Glen Rock’s council did not even mention the study, and took no such vote to fund its participation.”
It would appear Glen Rock is giving our Deputy Mayor lip service about this project. They’ll string us along until it’s too late and Ridgewood’s taxpayers wind up paying for everything.
Readers debate if the Planning Board made up its mind in favor of Valley or not ?
Unfortunately the Board has already made up its mind in favor of Valley and Valley knows this. They have to go through the process again as part of the settlement of the lawsuit brought by the CRR. Remember the CRR sued the Planning Board for not following proper procedure last time which would explain why Valley has gotten its way at every turn this time.
Sad but true but Valley has bullied and bribed its way to get this far and the Planning Board is squarely in Valley’s camp. Next step is the rubber stamp from their former VP – Councilwoman Hauck. Time to start putting some real pressure on her to recuse or the bulldozers will roll.
or…….
Actually, the Board has to go through the process again because in 2010 the Village Council unanimously voted down Valley’s bid to double in size. Valley is now addressing the points brought up by the Council at that time. The trouble is, Valley hasn’t made significant changes, although the numbers have been sliced and diced to give the appearance of something they’re not. Bottom line: Valley Hospital still wants to double in size (starting almost from scratch) in a residential neighborhood of single-family homes, three schools, and two major playing fields.
****It might be true that the PB has already made up its mind. But I believe we can change minds through our strength in numbers. And we do outnumber the folks who actually, ludicrously, think the expansion might be a good thing.

Steve Lonegan , Mark Levin and Sarah Palin rev up conservatives at speedway rally
By Susan K. Livio and Seth Augenstein/The Star-Ledger
PLUMSTED TOWNSHIP — Sarah Palin rode the Tea Party Express tour bus into Ocean County today to lend her political star power to Republican Steve Lonegan’s U.S. Senate campaign, urging the roughly 2,000 supporters to muster up “their Jersey fight” to help him defeat Cory Booker.
In the final weekend before the special election on Wednesday, Booker also revved up his campaign by launching a bus tour in north Jersey for a series of events he delayed after his father’s death on Thursday.
With polls putting Lonegan within 12 percentage points of Booker — a much closer margin than pundits had predicted — both camps worked aggressively to energize their supporters. Both candidates capitalized on the public discontent with the federal government shutdown, 12 days old with no end in sight.
If New Jersey, a blue state, sends a conservative like Lonegan to Washington, President Obama and the Democratic leaders in Congress would understand that their policies and message are failing, Palin said.
Computer Glitch Blamed For Nationwide EBT System Shutdown On Saturday
October 12, 2013 6:32 PM
BOSTON (CBS/AP) – People in Ohio, Michigan and 15 other states found themselves unable to use their food stamp debit-style cards on Saturday, after a routine test of backup systems by vendor Xerox Corp. resulted in a system failure.
At about 9 a.m. Saturday, reports from across the country began pouring in that customers’ EBT cards were not working in stores.
At 2 p.m., an EBT customer service representative told CBS Boston that the system was currently down for a computer system upgrade.
Xerox spokeswoman Jennifer Wasmer released further details later in the afternoon in an emailed statement.
“While the electronic benefits system is now up and running, beneficiaries in the 17 affected states continue to experience connectivity issues to access their benefits. Technical staff is addressing the issue and expect the system to be restored soon,” Wasmer said. “Beneficiaries requiring access to their benefits can work with their local retailers who can activate an emergency voucher system where available. We appreciate our clients’ patience while we work through this outage as quickly as possible.”
