Pope Francis marks Assisi visit with call for church to shun worldliness
During visit to Assisi where Saint Francis lived in 12th century, pontiff says worldliness leads to vanity, arrogance and pride

The Roman Catholic church, from the lowliest priest to the pontiff himself, must strip itself of all vanity, arrogance and pride and humbly serve the poorest members of society, Pope Francis has said.
The pope’s appeal, made in the central Italian town of Assisi where his namesake Saint Francis lived in the 12th century, comes amid a drive by Francis to turn around a church plagued by financial and sexual abuse scandals.
Saint Francis is revered by Catholics and many other Christians for his simple values, poverty and love of nature, qualities the Argentinian-born Francis has made the keynote of his papacy since his election in March.
“This is a good occasion to invite the church to strip itself of worldliness,” he said in a room that marks the spot where Saint Francis stripped naked as a young man, renounced his wealthy family and set out to serve the poor.
Apparently just before the Park Service toner ran out, they were able to print these notices and erect a barricade. Note that their caring was unabated – rather than just protecting tourists from the dangers of the unsupervised memorial itself, they created a safety zone far enough so that we could barely see Lincoln’s statue. – Mike P
Where’s sense of crisis in a 17% government shutdown?
By BYRON YORK | OCTOBER 5, 2013 AT 1:01 PM
Everyone knows the phrase “government shutdown” doesn’t mean the entire U.S. government is shut down. So in a partial government shutdown, like the one underway at the moment, how much of the government is actually shut down, and how much is not?
One way to measure that is in how much money the government spends. In a conversation Thursday, a Republican member of Congress mentioned that the military pay act, passed by Congress and signed by President Obama at the beginning of the shutdown, is actually a huge percentage of the government’s discretionary spending in any given year. And that is still flowing. So if you took that money, and added it to all the entitlement spending that is unaffected by a shutdown, plus all the areas of spending that are exempted from a shutdown, and added it all together, how much of the federal government’s total spending is still underway even though the government is technically shut down?
Road to Mount Rushmore. The National Parks Service placed the cones there to prevent viewers from stopping on the side of the road to view the monument
I asked a Republican source on the Senate Budget Committee for an estimate. This was the answer: “Based on estimates drawn from CBO and OMB data, 83 percent of government operations will continue. This figure assumes that the government pays amounts due on appropriations obligated before the shutdown ($512 billion), spends $225 billion on exempted military and civilian personnel, pays entitlement benefits for those found eligible before the shutdown (about $2 trillion), and pays interest costs when due ($237 billion). This is about 83 percent of projected 2014 spending of $3.6 trillion.”
Readers Continue to doubt Ms. Price’s impartiality
The bias issue aside, Ms. Price’s job as the Planning Board attorney is to see that procedure is followed. Her job is not to weigh in on testimony or to offer any of her own opinions which she has done repeatedly.
Maybe we’d give her a pass if she at least gave the appearance of impartiality.
While the meetings have all been emotional. Price has consistently allowed Valley to get its message out and allow any and all of Valley’s “experts” speak. Now that the residents finally get to speak, she’s not allowing them. She should shut Drill up. Maybe then, we’d feel that she’s not totally favoring Valley.
Gail Price is simply scared to death that Valley will sue the PB if things don’t go their way. What this says about the process is that it’s completely flawed – skewed toward any developer who wishes to build here. Yes, any developer, in this case Valley, can come into Ridgewood and bully their way into doing whatever they want.

Reader says Affordable Care Act for Millennials it time to pay up.
The state forces me to have car insurance but I would not complain. Where is the revolt?
Young “healthy” people need preventive care and they can havg health problems and they certainly have accidents. When the uninsured show up at the hospital we all pay for that visit. I don’t want to pay for your kids because they thought that they were invincible. They should need a credit card for a hospital admission.
What age or health crisis would be the tipping point where a “young” person decides to become insured?
If someone opts out of the system there should be a penalty when they decide to opt in. The Affordable Care Act will allow individuals to join with pre-existing conditions and they can join at any time. A person who opts out and then signs up after a car accident should be forced to pay for their “healthy” no premium years.
There are always people trying to live off the government and some millennials are known to be narcissistic. They have been given much and don’t know when it it time to pay up.
I am sure that they will argue that they pay into social security and are funding my retirement. I would be happy if they changed the system so that the money that I paid in over the years was returned with interest. Just give back me what I paid -like a forced retirement plan to go with my forced health insurance
Just when you think it cannot get any worse, it does. This week has been unbelievable.
The anger that most of us felt when we found out that this pResident thought he could shut out the GREATEST GENERATION from their OWN long-deserved memorial was what can only be called RIGHTEOUS INDIGNATION!
A whole nation is in disbelief at the long list of abuses against our founders, against our founding documents, against our military, and against our way of life. BUT TO AB– USE THE ELDER GENERATION, the one who went to war against the same tyranny we see in the White House?
Mr. Charles Grey from Arkansas at Memorial today. Mr. Grey was the head navigator for the 305th Bomb Group and completed 30 successful missions over Europe with 2 missions directly into Berlin targeting Hitlers headquarters. Talk about tough, this man checked himself out of the hospital last night to make this trip today! The Guardians say they are having a hard time keeping his blood Oxygen level at only 80% but he said he wasn’t going to miss this.
THAT IS A BRIDGE TOO FAR.
Those WWII Vets deserved red carpet — and the way they were treated make most red-blooded Americans SEE RED.
This is all meant to discourage and demean, but we do not SIT AND TAKE IT. This small man that sits in the Oval Office with his feet on the desk, this small man who loves to poke the sleeping GIANT, has no IDEA what he’s asking for.
Americans find ways around things and through things, and this small man has found a way to unite us that cuts across every single demographic there is, and we are learning that UNITED WE STAND.
I would like to thank my very own Representative Richard Hudson for being there to support our Greatest Generation!!!!
NO ONE MESSES WITH THE GREATEST GENERATION without some consequences.
I have a feeling the King Barry never got any ‘whoopins’ from his parents or grandparents and he thus has no idea about cause and effect. Do you think he might be able to learn that in his fifties?
Million Veteran March On The D.C. Memorials October 13th
Americans are justifiably angry over the political game being played by the Obama administration to barricade the World War II Memorial in Washington. And they should be. Under federal law, there is no justifiable reason for closing the memorial.
On Tuesday, the National Park Service put up barricades around the open-air memorial that is normally accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week, even when Park Service personnel are not there. Police threatened to arrest visiting veterans, who came to Washington as part of Honor Flight, a non-profit that gives veterans free transportation so they can see war memorials.
It is one of the most blatant and shameful political stunts being carried out by the White House, which appears intent on keeping the government shut down to protect Obamacare.
How do we know this is purely political theater? Because under applicable federal law — and the interpretation of that law by both the Justice Department and the Office of Management and Budget — all “law enforcement” operations of the federal government are exempted from being shut down during any funding lapse.
The only possible reason for preventing access to the World War II Memorial would be a concern about security. But because the National Park Police are operating even during the government “slimdown” — that is why they were at the memorial when the veterans were threatened with arrest — this is not a valid concern.
Under intense pressure, the Obama administration began to relent Wednesday, agreeing to “an accommodation for the Honor Flights.” That isn’t good enough. The memorials should be fully open for everyone and anyone.
The White House had an opportunity to prevent this confrontation. Representative Steven Palazzo (R-MS), who helped arrange Tuesday’s Honor Flight visit, says both the White House and the Interior Department rejected his request to allow the veterans to visit the memorial. Judicial Watch has filed a Freedom of Information Act request with the National Park Service, which claimed it was told by the White House to shut down the memorial.
With the help of Representatives Palazzo, Louie Gohmert (R-TX), Steve King (R-IA), and Michele Bachmann (R-MN), and with the same gung-ho spirit that characterized their courageous actions during World War II, the veterans defied the Park Service and pushed through the barriers, just like they did on the beaches of Normandy in 1944.
In an action that defies logic and any appreciation for the deep sacrifices of these veterans, more Park Service employees were dispatched by the Obama administration on Wednesday morning to re-erect the barriers — “two more security officials than the State Department had in Benghazi a year ago on the night of the terrorist attack that killed four, including the U.S. ambassador,” according to the Washington Examiner.
There are no legal or budget reasons whatsoever for the memorial to be barricaded, shut down, and fenced off — other than President Obama’s desire to engage in political theatrics intended to annoy as many members of the public as possible and blame conservatives who are trying to stop the President’s unfair, unaffordable, and unworkable health-care law.
Obama’s decision to prolong the shutdown continues to go against the will of the American people, who are facing higher health care costs, the loss of health insurance, fewer hours at work, and difficulty finding a job. It’s no wonder just 17 percent of Americans believe Obamacare will be a good thing for themselves or their families, according to a new CNN/ORC International survey.
It’s time for the President to face reality. He should be ashamed for engaging in political stunts and trying to deny access to the veterans who paid for the World War II Memorial with their service and sacrifices — and whose comrades-in-arms paid for the memorial with their lives.
Is Obamacare’s First Enrollee Bogus?
By Megan McArdle Oct 4, 2013 2:45 PM ET
It seems as if every policy reporter in the nation spent the last four days trying to log in and browse policies on Healthcare.gov, yet was stymied by glitches. Many of us have also been on the lookout for people who had actually bought insurance policies under Obamacare. Over the first day, reports trickled in of various successes — most of them in Kentucky, funnily enough. (As I tweeted at the time, who had Kentucky in the office pool for “most successful exchange rollout”? Yeah, me neither.)
But no one could find anyone who had enrolled in one of the 36 exchanges being run by the Federal government, and people were beginning to doubt that anyone had, despite the White House’s assurances. Then finally, finally, Enroll America, a nonprofit ally of the White House run by a former White House communications staffer, came up with someone who had managed to get past all the glitches: Chad Henderson, a student and part-time day-care worker in Georgia who managed to enroll himself and his father in “bronze” plans (the tier with the lowest premium cost and highest cost-sharing). The Federal exchange websites might not be working well, but here at least was proof that they were working at all. Kathleen Sebelius, the secretary of Health and Human Services, and @Obamacare both retweeted Henderson about getting enrolled:
The next morning, Enroll America offered his name to the press. Henderson was interviewed by Politico, the Washington Post and the Huffington Post, among others. Details of his story emerged: He had waited until 3 am on Oct. 1 to log in. “Once I created an account, there were hardly any glitches at all after that,” he told the Huffington Post, putting him in rare company. Indeed, I tried again last night, and managed to get as far as inputting personal information before it froze up and refused to go any further.
Once in, Henderson said, he purchased two policies — one for himself, and one for his father. He could have gone on his father’s insurance, at a heavily subsidized rate, because his father makes $24,000 a year selling shave ice. But “he’s old school, so he wants me to take responsibility,” the younger Henderson told HuffPo. Henderson said he purchased a $175 bronze plan for himself. Since he makes only $7,000 a year, that’s a big sacrifice. If Georgia had passed the Medicaid expansion, he could have gone on Medicaid for free, but Georgia, like most Republican states, declined. Ironically, his father, who has a much higher income, is eligible for the tax subsidies. Chad said his dad would be paying $250 a month.
But there was some weirdness about the story. In the run-up, many reports said that the exchanges were going live at 8 a.m. on Tuesday — how was it that the only person anyone could find who had bought insurance managed to get in five hours early? Not impossible — the servers could have been brought up early, or the reports could have been wrong — but lots of people had been trying to log in starting at midnight, and no one else had gotten through. Yet Henderson had apparently created not one but two accounts. And why, if he had gotten insurance at 3 a.m., did he wait more than half a day to tweet about it?

Obamanomics, RIP
By Arthur Laffer & Stephen Moore from the October 2013 issue
An autopsy of an idea.
AN OLD SAYING sometimes attributed to Mark Twain goes: “It ain’t what you don’t know that gets you into trouble. It’s what you know for sure that just ain’t so.” And so it is with the current view that government spending stimulates the economy. It doesn’t. Government stimulus spending, paid for by running up the federal credit card, is why we have the never-ending Great Recession, though the left keeps fantasizing that spending “saved us from a second great depression.”
Now for the good news: The spending spree is over and Barack Obama is a lame duck. He is legislatively paralyzed. The signature achievement of his first term, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, is under steady fire, and his job approval rating continues to slip. But the best evidence of his shrinking agenda is the trend in federal spending. It’s falling, and not at a trickle. Think Niagara (figure 1).
Washington is experiencing one of the biggest fiscal retrenchments in modern history, and almost no one is paying attention. In the wake of the Bush-Pelosi-Obama spending splurge from 2008-11, federal spending has fallen by 3.1 percentage points of GDP. In the second quarter of 2009, according to National Income Products Account data, federal spending hit 26.5 percent of GDP, thanks to the Obama stimulus and the Bush recession. As of the second quarter of 2013, just as the sequester was beginning to take effect, federal spending as a share of GDP is down to 23.5 percent and, barring some unforeseen emergency, is on track to fall to around 23 percent by the end of this year. The turning point in spending from the binge years of 2009 and 2010 came when the Republicans took control of the House in 2011.
Cory Booker is all but certain to win the New Jersey special election for U.S. Senate.
But as polls show Republican rival Steve Lonegan tightening the race, Booker is getting an uncomfortable reminder that he will have to campaign hard to defend the seat just a year from now, when he’d be up for a full term. (Haberman/Politico)
Lonegan: War Memorial Shutdowns by the Obama Administration Shameful
“This despicable act of barricading the war memorials to veterans and the public is a shameful attempt by President Obama and his rubber stamps in Congress to ensure the government shutdown is painful and blame Republicans at the expense of the memory of those who gave their lives in their service to America”
METUCHEN, NJ – Mayor Steve Lonegan, the Republican candidate for the United State Senate, praised House Republicans and veterans who removed the barriers which the Obama administration used to close several memorials on the Mall in Washington D.C., including the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the National WWII Memorial.
“This despicable act of barricading the war memorials to veterans and the public is a shameful attempt by President Obama and his rubber stamps in Congress to ensure the government shutdown is painful and blame Republicans at the expense of the memory of those who gave their lives in their service to America,” Lonegan said.
“I call on Cory Booker to join me in denouncing the Obama administration’s shameful and disgraceful actions with regard to those who have served our country and those who have given their lives for our country,” Lonegan said.
“President Obama and his Congressional lackeys need to stop playing politics. They need to compromise with Republicans by supporting a one-year delay before implementing Obamacare,” added Lonegan.
“My opponent, Cory Booker, is running to be another Obama rubber-stamp who thinks that compromise means adopting his radical, left-wing beliefs,” Lonegan said. “New Jersey voters are going to stop him.
“If New Jersey voters choose to send me to the United States Senate, my election will send an instant signal to President Obama and everyone in Congress that the American people don’t want his health care plan, and that it is the President who needs to compromise.”
The election is in two weeks on Wednesday, October 16th.
