Lonegan Fires Back at Kathleen Sebelius and Obamacare

“Senior citizens who worked their whole lives and planned to rely on their private, employer-provided healthcare plans are now facing the loss of those plans and the uncertainty of the Obamacare exchanges.”

HOBOKEN, NJ – Mayor Steve Lonegan, the Republican candidate for the United States Senate, today spoke out about the latest attempt by Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius to prop up Obamacare on an apparent promotional tour for the flawed law.

“Senior citizens who worked their whole lives and planned to rely on their private, employer-provided healthcare plans are now facing the loss of those plans and the uncertainty of the Obamacare exchanges,” Lonegan said.

Lonegan pledged to fight to repeal Obamacare as a member of the Senate and to promote policies that would foster less expensive free-market healthcare solutions for consumers and taxpayers.

“This is an expensive law; expensive for taxpayers, expensive for employers, expensive for local governments, and certainly expensive for those who will be forced to buy insurance they neither want nor can afford.”

Lonegan served as Bogota Mayor for twelve years, winning three times in a town that gave Barack Obama 67.5 percent of the vote in 2012. He served for seven years as state director of Americans for Prosperity New Jersey, where he helped defeat liberal attempts to expand big government. Steve Lonegan is the conservative Republican candidate in the New Jersey special election for the United States Senate. Lonegan stands firmly on the bedrock conservative values of small government, fiscal responsibility and individual liberty.

EARTHQUAKE:Gun Rights Hold Victorious both Colorado Democratic State Senators Recalled!

EARTHQUAKE:Gun Rights Hold Victorious both Colorado Democratic State Senators Recalled!
September 11, 2013
Jim Geraghty

I went to bed convinced Second Amendment advocates and their allies had fought to a split decision in Colorado. In the early returns, it appeared that the issue of gun rights, while powerful, could hit a wall in districts where the demographics insulate a Democrat from discontent among her gun-owning constituents.

Nope:

An epic national debate over gun rights in Colorado on Tuesday saw two Democratic state senators ousted for their support for stricter laws, a “ready, aim, fired” message intended to stop other politicians for pushing for firearms restrictions. Senate President John Morse and Sen. Angela Giron will be replaced in office with Republican candidates who petitioned onto the recall ballot.

Party insiders always said Giron’s race was the harder one. Although her district is heavily Democratic, Pueblo is a blue-collar union town. Morse’s district included Manitou Springs and a portion of Colorado Springs — and more liberals.

Our Charlie Cooke, on the ground in Colorado Springs:

Nevertheless, by the end of the process, so anxious were the opponents of the recall that they felt compelled to rely heavily on Michael Bloomberg, who sent $350,000 to Colorado to fight the threat; members of Obama’s ground team were brought in to boost turnout, and even former president Bill Clinton was wheeled in at the last minute to try to tip the scales.

None of it worked. This was the recall that was never supposed to happen — let alone be successful. The nine men who set the ball rolling weren’t supposed to be capable of organizing a town hall, let alone taking down the state-senate president. And yet they did it. Victor Head, a 29-year-old plumber who had never been politically active, took down a senator in a district that went Democratic in 2012 by ten points; a group of six concerned men from the AR15.com chat room removed the state’s top-ranking legislator. “We are a quiet people,” recall founder Tim Knight told his victorious friends when the results became known at the Stargazers Theater. “You may be tempted to ignore us. Clearly, that would be a mistake.”

‘Artificial egg’ made from PLANTS backed by Bill Gates set to revolutionize cooking goes on sale at Whole Foods

A radical ‘artificial egg’ backed by Paypal billionaire Peter Thiel and Bill Gates goes on sale in US supermarkets for the first time today.

Made from plants, it can replace eggs in everything from cakes to mayonnaise – without a chicken ever coming close to the production process.

The team today started selling their ‘plant egg’, called Beyond Eggs, in Whole Foods in California – and say it could soon be available in supermarkets worldwide.

‘We want to take animals out of the equation,’ said Josh Tetrick, the firm’s founder. ‘The food industry is begging for innovation, especially where animals are involved – it is a broken industry.’

Tetrick’s idea was to find a mix of easy-to-grow plants that, when mixed together in the right way, replicate the taste, nutritional values and cooking properties of an egg.

This, he believes will allow the firm to produce its substitute for mass market foods – and to allow developing worlds to grow their own versions with added nutrients.

‘Eggs are functionally incredible, they do everything from hold oil and water in mayo to making the muffin rise and holding scrambled eggs together,’ he said ‘I started to think what if we can find plants that can do this. We have about 12 plants pre-selected, including a pea already widely grown in Canada. There’s also a bean in South Asia that is incredible in scrambled eggs.’

Google security exec: ‘Passwords are dead’

Google security exec: ‘Passwords are dead’
by Daniel Terdiman September 10, 2013 12:57 PM PDT

Speaking at TechCrunch Disrupt, Google’s Heather Adkins says startups should look beyond passwords to secure users and their data

New startups looking for ways to keep their users secure should know one thing, a top Google security executive said Tuesday: “Passwords are dead.”

Speaking on a TechCrunch Disrupt panel called “Spies Like Us,” Heather Adkins, Google’s manager of information security, told moderator Greg Ferenstein that in the future, the “game is over for” any startup that relies on passwords as its chief method to secure users and their data.

Google manager of information security Heather Adkins.

Adkins, speaking alongside Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers managing partner Ted Schlein and author James Bamford, said that looking ahead, “our relationship with passwords are done,” and that “passwords are done at Google.”

She talked briefly about Google’s use of two-step authentication and the fact that the search giant has been working to innovate in the area of non-standard password security. As a result, she said, any startup that still relies on standard passwords needs to ensure that it has an abuse team set up to deal “with customers getting compromised.”

Although Adkins didn’t offer any real specifics on how Google will innovate beyond today’s security, she did say the company is experimenting with hardware-based tokens as well as a Motorola-created system that authenticates users by having them touch a device to something embedded, or held, in their own clothing. “A hacker can’t steal that from you,” she said.

Ridgewood’s policy on school cheating tweaked

Ridgewood’s policy on school cheating tweaked

The Ridgewood News

Ridgewood High School (RHS) has revised its student Academic Integrity Policy (AIP) this year, adding mention of specific penalties and details about what constitutes cheating.

The revision reflects the district’s interest in preparing students for college and also combating the sometimes unintentional cheating by students who, while increasingly using technology, are becoming more accustomed to sharing information online.

According to RHS Principal Tom Gorman, the policy used to be much shorter, but the district wants to be more explanatory.

He noted that students have been asked by email to take a quick online tutorial about the new policy and also about the district’s Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying policy. Students should complete the tutorial by the start of the school year, he said.

“We really worked on the policy,” Gorman said at a recent Board of Education (BOE) meeting. “It really spells it out.”

In a letter emailed to parents and students this month, AIP violations “include, but are not limited to, plagiarism, cheating, and unapproved collaboration,” Gorman said.

Reader says Village officials would have preferred a high voltage utility pole route of South Maple to East Ridgewood, or South Maple to Dayton

Reader says Village officials would have preferred a high voltage utility pole route of South Maple to East Ridgewood, or South Maple to Dayton.

Testimony at the public hearing provided by Village of Ridgewood witness Michael Barker suggests that if a street route were PSE&G’s only option, Village officials would have preferred a route that bypassed Spring Avenue and Hope Street.  Most likely South Maple to East Ridgewood, or South Maple to Dayton.

However, this raises the question:  “Why are property owners/residents of South Maple Avenue and Dayton Street any less important than property owners/residents of Spring Avenue and Hope Street?”  The direction Mr. Barker’s testimony took suggested that Village officials place more importance on “protecting” the rights of single family home owners than they do for those owners of commercial and multifamily properties.

How could Village officials possibly say tall poles are bad for one street, but not for another (and the other street is not industrial in composition)?

A political time bomb in my opinion.

Lonegan: Booker Afraid to Admit Support for Obama’s War

Lonegan: Booker Afraid to Admit Support for Obama’s War

“Cory Booker is afraid to admit he supports the President’s proposed war in Syria,” Lonegan said, “so instead he attempts to hide behind the smokescreen of not having enough information. But people are onto the Mayor’s act now, and his refusal to speak out against the President’s war can only be interpreted as assent.”

BOGOTA, NJ – Republican U.S. Senate candidate Steve Lonegan accused Democrat Cory Booker of being “afraid to admit he supports President Obama’s proposal for military action in Syria.”

“Mayor Booker claims he cannot say whether he will support or oppose President Obama’s proposed military attack on Syria allegedly because he has no access to classified information,” Lonegan said, calling that argument “as fake as T-Bone.”

“The American people have figured out very quickly that President Obama has not made the case that American interests are at stake in Syria,” Lonegan said. “Americans are sick of being the world’s policeman and sick of getting involved in domestic civil wars where there is no evidence that America’s national security is threatened.”

Mayor Lonegan said he spoke out against the proposal to go to war in Syria immediately after the President proposed it. “Once again, Cory Booker is trying to talk out of three sides of his mouth on this issue in an attempt to hide the reality that he does whatever he is told to do by President Obama,” Lonegan added. “New Jersey needs a fighter for the people, not an Obama Rubber Stamp, representing us in the U.S. Senate.”

Lonegan’s comments came to members of the media in Paterson where Lonegan was marching in the 24th Annual New Jersey State Dominican Parade. Lonegan built and operated a cabinet manufacturing business in Paterson for over a decade.

Lonegan served as Bogota Mayor for twelve years, winning three times in a town that gave Barack Obama 67.5 percent of the vote in 2012. He served for seven years as state director of Americans for Prosperity New Jersey, where he helped defeat liberal attempts to expand big government. The United States of weakness

The United States of weakness
By ALEXANDER BURNS and JOHN F. HARRIS | 9/10/13 5:00 AM EDT

Red lines that may or may not be real, retaliatory strikes that may or may not be hours from launch, congressional debates that may or may not be necessary for the president to do what he wants—whatever that happens to be this hour.

Barack Obama’s unsteady handling of the Syria crisis has been an avert-your-gaze moment in the history of the modern presidency — highlighting his unsettled views and unattractive options in a way that has caused his enemies to cackle and supporters to cringe.

But the spotlight on Obama’s so-far flaccid performance has obscured a larger reality; the Syria episode has revealed the weakness of multiple institutions and would-be leaders in American life.

That the president and congressional leaders of both parties could be in agreement on a matter of national security — and that much of the country would shrug — is a historic event.

Mystery deepens over $10 World Trade Center deal

Mystery deepens over $10 World Trade Center deal

The Record

The Port Authority said Monday that it had no record of its governing board approving a 1986 deal that handed over ownership of the World Trade Center name for $10. And the agency’s top executive at the time said he didn’t recall it ever coming across his desk.

That added to the mystery surrounding how the Port Authority came to sell the vaunted name of its Manhattan landmark to a group run by a retiring agency executive who made millions in the years that followed.

The Christie administration, which jointly steers the agency with New York’s governor, slammed the deal on Monday, in response to a story in The Record a day earlier.

“You can be sure that would never happen under this administration,” Christie spokesman Michael Drewniak said. “I’d venture to say that if something like that was done today, it would probably draw the attention of the United States Attorney’s Office.”

The World Trade Centers Association, meanwhile, defended its stewardship of the name it inherited a quarter-century ago, and said the deal was far from a “secret” pact, as described by the Port Authority’s deputy executive, Bill Baroni, a Christie appointee. Baroni, who was appointed in 2010, said he had never dealt with the group and called for a “review” of its activities.

The WTCA said it had struck an agreement with the bi-state agency as recently as 2006 that allowed the Port Authority to use the name on the buildings now under construction to replace the Twin Towers in lower Manhattan. The two organizations recently began a new round of negotiations over the Port Authority’s plans to sell merchandise that carries the World Trade Center brand name.
