Reader says Ridgewood Schools embrace differences and want nothing to do with traditional families who identify as Americans.

Diversity as long as every student learns in the “lecture and yawn” classes. There is no imagination and no attempt to engage the students.

They embrace other cultures. We have Asian Festival but do not even think about Christmas. RPS want nothing to do with the traditions of families who identify as Americans.

My family celebrates the birth of Christ and the secular arrival of Santa on December 25.

We sing religious and non religious Christmas songs. We buy presents for families in the area who need gifts for themselves and their children.

To avoid the dreaded Christmas celebrations several years ago Somerville school had a 4th of july party on the last day of school before Christmas break. I think that the Fourth of July celebration in December ended quickly because it confused everyone. It was just another “holiday” to prepare for in an already busy holiday season.

Report: 25 percent of N.J. families are poor
Sunday September 8, 2013, 12:02 PM
BY  DAVE SHEINGOLD
STAFF WRITER
The Record

Poverty levels in New Jersey are bad and getting worse, as a quarter of the state’s households now struggle to afford housing, food, medical care and other necessities, according to a new report by a leading poverty research group.

The study, released today by the Legal Services of New Jersey Poverty Research Institute, says that in one of the nation’s wealthiest states, 2.1 million people live in households that have a hard time meeting their basic needs. That number grew by about 359,000 during and after the Great Recession and now comprises 24.7 percent of New Jersey residents.

Hardest hit is Passaic County, where 37 percent of the residents are poor, followed by Cumberland, Essex and Hudson counties, while Bergen County’s rate stands at 18 percent. Even in Morris, Hunterdon and Somerset and other wealthy counties in northern New Jersey, 10 to 14 percent of the residents are poor, according to the report, which is based largely on 2011 data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

The number of households having a hard time staying afloat financially highlights the underside of a state where the median household income ranked third in the country in 2011.

Collapse of American Influence Recalls Disintegration of Soviet Union, Fall of France

Collapse of American Influence Recalls Disintegration of Soviet Union, Fall of France
By CONRAD BLACK, Special to the Sun | September 7, 2013

Not since the disintegration of the Soviet Union in 1991, and prior to that the fall of France in 1940, has there been so swift an erosion of the world influence of a Great Power as we are witnessing with the United States.

The Soviet Union crumbled jurisdictionally: In 1990-1991, one country became the 16 formerly constituent republics of that country, and except perhaps for Belarus, none of them show much disposition to return to the Russian fold into which they had been gathered, almost always by brute force, over the previous 300 years.

The cataclysmic decline of France, of course, was the result of being overrun by Nazi Germany in 1940. And while it took until the return of de Gaulle in 1958 and the establishment of the Fifth Republic with durable governments and a serious currency, and the end of the Algerian War in 1962, and the addition of some other cubits to France’s stature, the largest step in its resurrection was accomplished by the Allied armies sweeping the Germans out of France in 1944.

What we are witnessing now in the United States, by contrast, is just the backwash of inept policy-making in Washington, and nothing that could not eventually be put right. But for this administration to redeem its credibility now would require a change of direction and method so radical it would be the national equivalent of the comeback of Lazarus: a miraculous revolution in the condition of an individual (President Obama), and a comparable metamorphosis (or a comprehensive replacement) of the astonishingly implausible claque around him.

Until recently, it would have been unimaginable to conceive of John Kerry as the strongman of the National Security Council. This is the man who attended political catechism classes from the North Vietnamese to memorize and repeat their accusations against his country of war crimes in Indochina, and, inter alia, ran for president in 2004 asserting that while he had voted to invade Iraq in 2003, he was not implicated in that decision because he did not vote to fund the invasion once underway. (Perhaps Thomas E. Dewey would have been an upset presidential winner in 1944 if he had proclaimed his support for the D-Day landings but advocated an immediate cut-off of funds for General Eisenhower’s armies of liberation.)

Congressional veterans line up against military intervention in Syria

Congressional veterans line up against military intervention in Syria
By Carlo Muñoz – 09/07/13 05:07 PM ET

The majority of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans serving in Congress are lining up against President Obama’s plan for military action in Syria.

Of the 16 veterans of those two conflicts serving in Congress, only GOP Reps. Adam Kinzinger (Ill.) and Tom Cotton (Ark.) have publicly supported the White House’s plan.

Three other members — Iraq War veterans and Reps. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii), Brad Wenstrup (R-Ohio) and Steve Stivers (R-Ohio) are undecided.

A fourth, Scott Perry (R-Pa.), said he hasn’t made up his mind either, though he told a town hall this week he wasn’t inclined to support a resolution authorizing force.

Ten of the remaining members have announced their opposition to a military strike.

Benghazi haunting Obama effort to win support for Syria strike
By Julian Pecquet – 09/08/13 06:00 AM ET

The first anniversary of the Benghazi, Libya terror attack is making it more difficult for President Obama to win support for a military strike against Syria.

Tea Party lawmakers say the Obama administration lacks credibility on Syria because of the Benghazi attack.

“I can’t discuss the possibility of the U.S. involvement in Syria’s civil war without also talking about Benghazi,” Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-S.C.) told Secretary of State John Kerry during a testy exchange at Wednesday’s House Foreign Affairs hearing.

“The administration has a serious credibility issue with the American people due to the unanswered questions surrounding the terrorist attack in Benghazi almost a year ago,” Duncan said.

Citing costs, IBM to move retirees off health plan

Citing costs, IBM to move retirees off health plan
Published September 07, 2013
The Wall Street Journal

International Business Machines Corp. plans to move about 110,000 retirees off its company-sponsored health plan and instead give them a payment to buy coverage on a health-insurance exchange, in a sign that even big, well-capitalized employers aren’t likely to keep providing the once-common benefits as medical costs continue to rise.

The move, which will affect all IBM retirees once they become eligible for Medicare, will relieve the technology company of the responsibility of managing retirement health-care benefits. IBM said the growing cost of care makes its current plan unsustainable without big premium increases.

IBM’s shift is an indication that health-insurance marketplaces, similar to the public exchanges proposed under President Barack Obama’s health-care overhaul, will play a bigger role as companies move coverage down the path taken by many pensions, paying employees and retirees a fixed sum to manage their own care.

In notices signed by Chief Health Director Kyu Rhee, IBM has told retirees in recent weeks that to keep receiving coverage, they will need to pick a plan offered through Extend Health, a large private Medicare exchange run by New York-based Towers Watson & Co.

McVey family of Ridgewood at many stages

McVey family of Ridgewood at many stages
Friday September 6, 2013, 3:06 PM
BY  BETSY MURPHY
CORRESPONDENT
The Ridgewood News

The musical McVeys just keep rolling merrily along.

After eight months on the road with the touring company of “Les Miserables,” they are back home. When 8-year-old Kylie went on tour with her father, Mark, mom Christie – determined to keep the family together – took 11-year-old Grace and went along. Home-schooled for the spring term, the girls’ experience traveling was certainly an educational one.

Once home, but not necessarily settling down, the acting and singing kept on going for everyone. Kylie acted in a music video this summer, “Young Marie,” recorded with a newish band called “Great Caesar” who “want to change the world one song at a time,” says Christie.

“They are seven guys from the same elementary school, now in their late 20s, who formed a band. They began with a Kickstarter project and raised $50,000. The short video was filmed in Connecticut in the backyards of their parents, with a different family providing the meal each night.” She pauses, then says, “They all have day jobs.”

Antoinette Montague

Born and raised in Newark, NJ Antoinette was originally drawn to music by her parents and later learned well from her mentors, Carrie Smith, Etta Jones, Della Griffen, and Myrna Lake.

Her love of humanity and music bring joy to many people. Jimmy Heath says, “Antoinette has the instrument, delivery, and enunciation when performing that touched my soul.” After meeting up with her mentor, the renowned Etta James, Montague released her first CD, “Pretty Blues.”  She has appeared on the cover of Jazz Improv and on 2 book covers of Who’s Who in Jazz, Cabaret and Music.  Her album “Behind the Smile” features a diverse repertoire of standards and originals.  Both CDs are available for purchase at today’s festival.

Antoinette has performed at Lincoln Center’s Club Coca Cola, The Lenox Lounge, The Blue Note, Kitano Jazz, and Jazmobile’s Summer Breeze Concert.

Winard Harper

Constantly in reverence of his predecessors while remaining innovative in his own right, Harper has become one of the most celebrated drummers in jazz.

He is a virtuoso on the drum set as well as the balafon, the West African equivalent of the marimba. Critics have written that Winard is as pleasing and entertaining to watch as he is to hear. “As tasteful a drummer as one could ask for,” according to Jeff Kaliss of JazzTimes. Franz Matzner recently wrote in All About Jazz that the sextet’s performance “culminated in an evening of fireworks with a sustained display of percussive pyrotechnics by Harper so rapid fire, so mind bogglingly dexterous, and so expressively diverse, as to be truly awe-inspiring.” And in a Washington Post review, Mike Joyce said, “Winard Harper’s wonderfully orchestrated solos alone might have forced a corpse to grin!”

“As tasteful a drummer as one could ask for.”

— JazzTimes

“No other drummer captures the spirit of Art Blakey more than Winard Harper.”

Rob Paparozzi

New Jersey front man, singer and harmonica player Rob Paparozzi has been a blues performer since 1967. But Rob is far from being strictly a blues musician. In fact he’s at home when playing a wide range of music, ranging from rock to blues to jazz to pop.  This versatility is reflected in the long and remarkably diverse list of major artists Rob has worked with, including B.B. King, Dr. John, Bruce Springsteen, Whitney Housten, Carole King, Roberta Flack, Culture Club, Cyndi Lauper, Randy Newman, Jimmy McGriff, and James Galway.

Rob has toured the world with the “Original Blues Brothers Band,” featuring guitar legend Steve Cropper and special guest Eddie Floyd from 2000-2007.  Most recently, Rob was part of “Blood, Sweat, and Tears” as front man, lead vocalist and harmonica player, replacing David Clayton Thomas in 2004 – 2011.

Rob now leads his own band, The Hudson River Rats featuring Ed Alstrom, John Korba, Chris Eminizer, Bernard Purdie, Geaorge Naha, and Bailey Gee.  The shows are local in NJ and NY. As well as international.  In 2008, Rob worked on his debut CD, Etruscan Soul which features many varied styles and special guests.  The CD is available for purchase at today’s festival.

Rob’s Broadway, movie, and television credits are also extensive. They include Broadway productions of Big River and The Will Roger’s Follies.  Films Flirting with Disaster and Ride. TV appearances on the Bill Cosby Show, CBS Early Show, and the David Letterman Show.  In 2009, Rob performed a duet with Bernadette Peters at The Minskoff Theatre in NYC.

TV commercials include ads for Scotch 3M, KFC, Pizza Hut, Maxwell House, Wendy’s, Lincoln-Mercury, Stouffers, Dodge, Ford, Coke, Pepsi, Dominos, Tylenol, and many more.  The bottom line is, even if you haven’t heard of Rob Paparozzi before, you’ve probably heard, and enjoyed, his work!

Welcome Rob to The Ridgewood Guild’s 2013 Jazz Feast!
