Age-Related Forgetfulness Tied to Diminished Brain Protein

Age-Related Forgetfulness Tied to Diminished Brain Protein
By Elizabeth Lopatto – 2013-08-28T18:00:00Z

Age-related forgetfulness may be due to a deficiency in a brain protein that helps form memories, a study found. Targeting the gene that produces that protein could lead to new therapies, the researchers said.

Scientists identified the protein, called RbAp48, in human brain cells and showed that inhibiting it in mice made the animals forgetful while raising the protein improved their memories. That suggests that age-related memory loss may be reversible, researchers said.

“All of us are living longer, and we want to stay engaged in a cognitively complex world,” said Scott Small, a study author and neurologist at Columbia University in New York. The mouse studies show that that too little of the protein is causing memory loss, he said.

The findings also confirm that age-related memory loss is different from the deficits seen in Alzheimer’s disease. The research is published today in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

Rep. Garrett Statement on Possible Military Intervention in Syria

Rep. Garrett Statement on Possible Military Intervention in Syria
Aug 30, 2013

U.S. Rep. Scott Garrett of Wantage is the only New Jersey House member so far to sign a letter asking President Obama to seek Congressional authorization before launching a possible military strike in Syria.

Ridgewood NJ, Rep. Scott Garrett (R-NJ), founder and Chairman of the Congressional Constitution Caucus, issued the following statement regarding a possible United States military intervention in Syria.

“Any time our servicemen and women are sent into combat, the president must receive authorization from Congress.  The United States Congress has the sole authority to send the American military into combat—not the United Nations or any other international institutions.

Engaging our military in Syria without prior congressional authorization—when no direct threat to the United States exists—would violate the separation of powers clearly outlined by the Constitution.  If President Obama thinks it is in the best interest of the United States to intervene militarily in Syria, he must come to Congress and seek authorization.”

Have a plan, and some money, before leaving the nest

The Record

After receiving her bachelor’s degree in women’s studies from Rutgers University in 2011, Genna Ayres of Ridgewood knew she wanted to leave New Jersey.

The summer after her graduation, Ayres, now 24, was already scoping out homes in Baltimore, where she spent two years at Goucher College.

It was too good to be true: Her friends were already in Baltimore, she knew the do’s and don’ts of the city, and for only $400 a month, she could share a house that had a yard and ample parking space.

Reality set in, however. Finding a job in her field was proving difficult, and soon the allure of living away from her parents’ nest was not her No. 1 priority.

Reader hopes for the best for Mr Fugazzie
August 30,2013
Rob

Hopefully, being written up in the NY Times helps Mr Fugazzie out. I’d read something about A&Ps business troubles last year; I guess it finally caught up with him.

I’m in my mid forties. I save like a fiend, and carry zero debt. If I find myself out in the cold past 55, I know the odds are, I’m staying there. Age discrimination is very real: people think you’ll be too jaded, confrontational or lack the enthusiasm required for lower and middle management jobs, and top jobs are not usually handed to the unemployed.

A good strategy: minimize debt. Stay as healthy as possible. If you still have insurance, use it! Get checked up, eat well, watch your weight etc etc. And consider a plan B: what would you do if you were shut out of the industry you’ve learned for the last 30 years? Do you have transferable skills? Could you learn something new? Teach? Pick up a trade? If you have the time, learn one now. Learn a language: Manderin, German, Japanese, Portugese, Russian (just listing the languages spoken in the worlds larger economies – full disclosure I know very little of any these but am learning Manderin).

Sorry to preach. Just my two cents. Good luck.

Lonegan Says No War Mr President

Lonegan Says No War Mr President

“While there has been much tragedy, the war in Syria is not simply between the Syrian government and the Syrian rebels. We must work with our allies to provide humanitarian aid to those affected by the war, but punitive actions in Syria will not deliver stability to the region.”

METUCHEN, NJ – Mayor Steve Lonegan, Republican candidate for the United States Senate, warned about inserting American military power in Syria yesterday and today continued his opposition to the President’s position.

Today, President Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry once again stated their support for military action in Syria without a clear plan of action.

Lonegan said, “Even without approval from Congress and our closest international allies, President Obama insists on military intervention in Syria.”

“While there has been much tragedy, the war in Syria is not simply between the Syrian government and the Syrian rebels. We must work with our allies to provide humanitarian aid to those affected by the war, but punitive actions in Syria will not deliver stability to the region.”

Yesterday, Lonegan introduced Councilman Mike Ghassali and Archbishop Cyril Aphrem Karim at a press conference to call on President Obama and Senator Bob Menendez not to engage in a military action in Syria.

“I want to thank Mayor Lonegan for taking a strong stand on the bombing in Syria,” Ghassali said. “That is the right decision to make.”

Archbishop Karim followed those statements and proclaimed “war will not benefit anyone.”

Lonegan also addressed President Obama’s unilateral pronouncement that he would view certain actions by the Syrian government as a “red line” and implied that he would commit the American military to respond in a punitive way against the Syrian government. “The President should not intervene militarily without the consent of Congress. And given the facts we have today, I would vote against sending American men and women into Syria as a member of the United States Senate,” Lonegan said.

Lonegan served as Bogota Mayor for twelve years, winning three times in a town that gave Barack Obama 67.5 percent of the vote in 2012. He served for seven years as state director of Americans for Prosperity New Jersey, where he helped defeat liberal attempts to expand big government. Steve Lonegan is the conservative Republican candidate in the New Jersey special election for the United States Senate. Lonegan stands firmly on the bedrock conservative values of small government, fiscal responsibility and individual liberty.

Rental properties spark leap in N.J. housing activitiy

Rental properties spark leap in N.J. housing activitiy

Home-building activity in New Jersey has risen 32 percent so far this year, propelled by construction of rental apartments — another sign that the housing market is healing.

Through July, the state had issued building permits for 13,234 housing units in New Jersey, compared with just over 10,000 for the same period last year, the U.S. Census Bureau reported Monday.

“There’s an acceleration in activity,” said Patrick O’Keefe, an economist with CohnReznick, an accounting firm with an office in Roseland. “While we’re not back to the go-go days of 2005, we have gotten back to a more sustainable pace.”

The state is on track to start more than 22,000 housing units this year — above the nearly 18,000 begun last year, but below the housing-boom peak of 38,588 in 2005, and under the historical average above 30,000.

Multifamily construction accounts for more than 57 percent of the state’s permits so far this year. That has been the trend in recent years, as demand has climbed for rentals in the face of foreclosures and tighter mortgage lending standards.

No Atlantic Hurricane by August in First Time in 11 Years
By Brian K. Sullivan – Aug 30, 2013 10:03 AM ET

August is about to end without an Atlantic hurricane for the first time since 2002, calling into question predictions of a more active storm season than normal.

Six tropical systems have formed in the Atlantic since the season began June 1 and none of them has grown to hurricane strength with winds of at least 74 miles (120 kilometers) per hour. Accumulated cyclone energy in the Atlantic, a measure of tropical power, is about 30 percent of where it normally would be, said Phil Klotzbach, lead author of Colorado State University’s seasonal hurricane forecasts.

“At this point, I doubt that a super-active hurricane season will happen,” Klotzbach said in an e-mail yesterday.

Teen employment hits record lows, suggesting lost generation

Teen employment hits record lows, suggesting lost generation
By Kevin G. Hall | McClatchy Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON — For the fourth consecutive summer, teen employment has stayed anchored around record lows, prompting experts to fear that a generation of youth is likely to be economically stunted with lower earnings and opportunities in years ahead.

The trend is all the more striking given that the overall unemployment rate has steadily dropped, to 7.4 percent in August. And employers in recent months have been collectively adding almost 200,000 new jobs a month. It led to hopes that this would be the summer when teen employment improved.

In 1999, slightly more than 52 percent of teens 16 to 19 worked a summer job. By this year, that number had plunged to about 32.25 percent over June and July. It means that slightly more than three in 10 teens actually worked a summer job, out of a universe of roughly 16.8 million U.S. teens.

SUSQUEHANNA-ROSELAND LINE CONSTRUCTION RECEIVES FAVORABLE COURT RULING

SUSQUEHANNA-ROSELAND LINE CONSTRUCTION RECEIVES FAVORABLE COURT RULING
August 30, 2013

Federal judge rules in favor of utility companies and National Park Service

(August 30, 2013 – Newark, NJ – ) Public Service Electric & Gas (PSE&G) and PPL Electric Utilities (PPL) called a federal judge’s decision to dismiss a lawsuit challenging federal permits for the Susquehanna-Roseland power line “the right decision for millions of people throughout the mid-Atlantic region who will have more reliable electric service because of this project.”

In a ruling today, Judge Richard W. Roberts of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia dismissed the action filed by several environmental groups seeking to block construction of the project through the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.

“This ruling affirms the position of the companies and the National Park Service that these permits were issued properly and after thorough study,” said Kim Hanemann, PSE&G Delivery Projects and Construction vice president. “We will move forward with construction as planned.”

The companies have implemented a broad-based information plan to keep the public and park visitors informed of construction activities, including any temporary trail and road closings. This information will be available on the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area Website, www.nps.gov/dewa/; on the PSE&G Susquehanna-Roseland project website, www.pseg.com/SR, and on the PPL Electric Utilities Susquehanna-Roseland project website, www.pplreliablepower.com/Susquehanna-Roseland.

The 145-mile Susquehanna-Roseland line is already under construction elsewhere in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The project is needed to keep the regional electric grid reliable, and to prevent overloads of other existing power lines. The line is expected to be in service by June 2015.

Fast-food workers stage largest protests yet

Fast-food workers stage largest protests yet
Aug 29, 6:08 PM (ET)

By CANDICE CHOINEW YORK (AP) – Fast-food workers and their supporters beat drums, blew whistles and chanted slogans Thursday on picket lines in dozens of U.S. cities, marking the largest protests yet in their quest for higher wages.

The nationwide day of demonstrations came after similar actions organized by unions and community groups over the past several months. Workers are calling for the right to unionize without interference from employers and for pay of $15 an hour. That’s more than double the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour, or $15,000 a year for full-time employees.

Thursday’s walkouts and protests reached about 60 cities, including New York, Chicago and Detroit, organizers said. But the turnout varied significantly. Some targeted restaurants were temporarily unable to do business because they had too few employees, and others seemingly operated normally.

Ryan Carter, a 29-year-old who bought a $1 cup of coffee at a New York McDonald’s where protesters gathered, said he “absolutely” supported the demand for higher wages.

Jersey Shore Revenues Down 40 Percent In Spite Of Pricey Ad Campaign

Towns In Monmouth And Ocean Counties Lost Millions In Summer After Sandy
August 30, 2013 6:44 PM

SEASIDE HEIGHTS, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — Jersey Shore communities issued a dire progress report on the last weekend of the summer. Some towns announced that they had lost millions of dollars in beach revenue in 2013 despite a massive summer ad campaign.

Sandy’s wrath was still visible in Mantaloking on Friday. Mounds of debris sat where homes once stood hundreds of yards away from beach goers enjoying the the water, CBS 2′s Christine Sloan reported.

Almost all of the 520 homes in Mantaloking were destroyed by Sandy. Fifty-six are gone, another 50 were knocked down.

“This is an amazing undertaking. Phenomenal. Although difficult to watch,” Denise Boughton said.

Officials said that the work was far from over.

“We still have three to four bulldozers working on a regular basis,” Office of Emergency Management spokesman Chris Niebling said.

Little damage remains in Seaside Heights where the boardwalk has already been rebuilt. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie appeared in Seaside over Labor Day Weekend to promote the shore and greet fans, but he was also confronted by residents who still need help.

“We need help in Ortley Beach. I wish you would go. It’s the next town over,” one person said.
