Governor Christie stood at the base of the Bayonne Bridge on Wednesday and at the center of a traditional election-season setting – union workers cheering his plans for a major road project.
At the same hour, the U.S. Supreme Court dropped the gnarly issue of same-sex marriage onto the campaign trail in New Jersey, creating a new challenge for Christie as he sets his sights on a second term this November – and, possibly, on the Oval Office in 2016. (Stile/The Record)
Sen. Stephen Sweeney’s attempted coup at Rutgers: Editorial
Senate President Stephen Sweeney’s bill to dismantle Rutgers’ Board of Trustees, if it passes, isn’t likely to survive the inevitable court challenge. The 1956 law that gave Rutgers to New Jersey enshrined the trustees’ power. It’s ironclad, and can’t be undone by anything as simple as a bill.
That makes the debate an academic one, which is appropriate. (Star-Ledger)

Reader says Kudos to the Chief for his continuing efforts at community outreach activities
Kudos to the Chief for his continuing efforts at community outreach activities. John is approachable, down to earth and people relate to him…… and he to them.
He is PRECISELY what we need as a commander, He is tough when he needs to be but he has a good way with people which makes him approachable and compassionate.
The only thing I miss is not seeing him ride around the Village on his police bicycle lately.
Christie disagrees with Westfield’s decision to put armed police in school
Gov. Chris Christie says he disagrees with Westfield’s decision to put an armed police officer in their schools.

Reader says NO one should be intimidated by this letter from the lawyer from North Jersey Media
The mayor is very smart. He likely made sure that he was one or two or three people removed from any call to the paper or any tip to the paper. But his hands are dirty, it seems quite certain.
Aronsohn DID talk to Ms. Macnamara at the council meeting, he DID ask her to revise or remove the letter, she DECLINED, and then mysteriously the letter was pulled. These are facts.
NO one should be intimidated by this letter from the lawyer. Of course the newspaper is defending itself. Everyone is on defense here. The mayor is running scared, the Ridgewood News is calling in lawyers to manage damage control, but the facts remain that the paper was tipped after the mayor asked for the letter to be pulled.
Readers Not Buying North Jersey Media Group denial that letter to editor pulled
Letters to the editor are signed and by their nature (like editorials and op-ed pieces) represent opinion. Any reader who identifies a factual error or wants to argue a point can write a follow-up letter; this happens routinely in every publication. Dialog and debate are good.
It is not the editor’s role to make sure that all statements in a letter to the editor are accurate as it is in an article or editorial. In most newspapers the top editor would never see letters to the editor before publication at all.
More fact checking in Ridgewood News articles, which are frequently full of errors that could easily have been checked, would be most welcome. But letters to the editor? No.
the fly sees lots of changes coming Cottage places way
With the retirement Angelo DeSimone and the rumored departure of Manager of Human Resources Gary Hall, the fly wonders how long will it be before Asst. Superintendent, Regina Botsford lands her dream job as a school superintendent in a district yet to be determined?
The end of the school year brings big changes to Cottage place and the fly wonders if the all three departures were to come to pass who would now write the script for Dr. Dan Fishbein and BOE member Michele Lenhard?

Truck Drivers Not Revved Up About New Safety Rules
Published: Sunday, 30 Jun 2013 | 7:00 AM ET
By: John W. Schoen | Economics Reporter
The federal government thinks long-haul truckers like Bryan Spoon need more rest.
But with the Department of Transportation’s new rules forcing drivers to take longer breaks and cut back on hours behind the wheel, Spoon thinks the government has created a solution looking for a problem.
“I wish the government would just quit trying to fix something that’s not broken,” he said on a recent rest stop in Columbia, Mo., after hauling a load of construction materials on the 48-foot Great Dane flatbed behind his 2009 Volvo 780.
“If I get any more breaks out here I won’t be able to make a living,” he said.
Starting Monday, drivers like Spooner will have to stick to a schedule that requires taking a 30-minute break in the first eight hours of driving, cut the maximum workweek to 70 hours from 82, and “restart” those 70 hours with a 34-hour break once a week.

The number of wiretaps secured in federal criminal investigations jumped 71 percent in 2012 over the previous year, according to newly released figures. ( https://www.uscourts.gov/Statistics/WiretapReports/wiretap-report-2012.aspx )

There was a 5 percent increase in state and local use of wiretaps in the same period.
US Spying ‘Out of Control’: EU Official Questions Trade Negotiations
By Claus Hecking and Stefan Schultz
Senior European Union officials are outraged by revelations that the US spied on EU representations in Washington and New York. Some have called for a suspension of talks on the trans-Atlantic free trade agreement.
Europeans are furious. Revelations that the US intelligence service National Security Agency (NSA) targeted the European Union and several European countries with its far-reaching spying activities have led to angry reactions from several senior EU and German politicians.
“We need more precise information,” said European Parliament President Martin Schulz. “But if it is true, it is a huge scandal. That would mean a huge burden for relations between the EU and the US. We now demand comprehensive information.”
Schulz was reacting to a report in SPIEGEL that the NSA had bugged the EU’s diplomatic representation in Washington and monitored its computer network (full story available on Monday). The EU’s representation to the United Nations in New York was targeted in a similar manner. US intelligence thus had access to EU email traffic and internal documents. The information appears in secret documents obtained by whistleblower Edward Snowden, some of which SPIEGEL has seen.
