Ridgewood safety officials are stressing public education and compliance as they plan upgrades and enhancements to the recently installed lightning detection system at municipal schools and parks.

A joint project between the village and the Ridgewood Board of Education (BOE), the installation of lightning detection equipment took place this summer at six locations in the village. Playing fields at Ridgewood High School, Benjamin Franklin Middle School, Hawes and Somerville elementary schools received the system, as did Veterans and Maple fields.

The system has been working well, but according to Ridgewood Police Sgt. Brian Pullman, equipment and hardware is not their concern.

“The interesting problem for us is the enforcement and relying heavily on the users of the fields, the coaches and the parents to make sure that they are listening to the system and obeying the rules,” Pullman said, speaking at a recent Village Council meeting.

When centrally located weather equipment detects a lightning strike within 10 miles, the system triggers several safety measures. Registered users will receive a text and/or email notification stating that a lightning emergency is in effect, while on-field equipment is activated.

Bergen mulls offering free dispatching?
Will This News Signal (no pun intended) The Demise of Northwest Bergen Central Dispatch?

Bergen County officials want to make an offer they believe municipal officials would find tough to turn down — use of the county’s 911 dispatch center in Mahwah at no additional charge.

The proposal, which is still in the discussion stage, could dramatically alter the economics that the county’s 70 municipalities have weighed in deciding whether to keep their own police and fire dispatchers, share the cost and service with neighboring towns or sign up with the county.

Since opening the $12.4 million Public Safety Operation Center in 2010, the county has had a difficult time convincing municipal officials that it would be more cost-effective for them to pay an annual fee to use the service.

Twenty towns have signed up to have their 911 calls routed through the center, including 11 towns for which the county also dispatches local police officers, firefighters and ambulances.

The county currently generates about $1 million in revenue annually from the towns that contract for that service, County Administrator Ed Trawinski said.

New Jersey Town Plans to Place Armed Guards in Schools
The mayor of Marlboro Township in New Jersey said Friday there would be armed security guards at the district’s nine schools starting in January
By Andrew Siff |  Saturday, Dec 22, 2012  |  Updated 11:02 AM EST

On the same day the National Rifle Association spoke publicly for the first time since last week’s elementary school massacre in Connecticut, one local school district announced plans to place armed police officers in every school.

The mayor of Marlboro Township in New Jersey said Friday there would be armed security guards at the district’s nine schools starting in January.

“This is not such a major change– we’re not putting in SWAT teams,” said Mayor Jon Hornik.

Hornik, who  has three school-aged children, told NBC 4 New York he was still shaken from the Newtown shooting, and he “hasn’t stopped hugging” his five-year-old.

Study: Facebook Could Cause Obesity no coloration found by reading the Ridgewood blog
December 23, 2012 11:46 AM

ATLANTA (CBS Atlanta) – Researchers at Columbia University have learned that using Facebook may be tied to obesity, due to the negative eating habits that could result from frequent visitation of social networking sites.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, obesity is a problem for approximately 35 percent of all American adults – a number that is reportedly rising with each passing year.

The study, led by Keith Wilcox, Ph.D., surveyed almost 500 people about their Internet use, specifically as it pertained to Facebook, Men’s Health is reporting.

Of the 470 participants asked, those who used Facebook the most had reportedly higher body mass indexes than those who were not as frequently engaged.

Researchers additionally learned that binge eating was commonly associated with high involvement with the social networking site.

Financial planners: How to survive fiscal cliff

Financial planners: How to survive fiscal cliff
By Blake Ellis @CNNMoney December 23, 2012: 10:26 AM E
NEW YORK (CNNMoney)

As Congress struggles to avert the fiscal cliff and its tax increases, financial planners are being peppered with questions from confused, worried or angry clients.

Their advice: Prepare for the worst but don’t panic.

Fiscal cliff quiz: How much will taxes go up?

“We’re doing a lot of hand holding,” said Lynn Ballou, Certified Financial Planner and managing partner at Ballou Plum Wealth Advisors. “Clients were really hopeful that Congress would set aside its differences and come to a decision, so most people don’t actually know what it’s going to mean to them if they go over the fiscal cliff. They’re concerned but they’re also just mad.”

Here are a few questions advisers have been fielding from their clients.

1. What’s going to happen to my money if we go over the fiscal cliff?

If the fiscal cliff isn’t avoided, tax rates on income, estates, gifts, capital gains and dividends will increase, and a number of tax breaks will expire.
The average household will face a total tax increase of $3,500, according to the Tax Policy Center.

Why the U.S. Won’t Lose its ‘AAA’ Rating…Yet

Why the U.S. Won’t Lose its ‘AAA’ Rating…Yet
Published December 21, 2012
Reuters

The stalled progress in the Washington budget battle may be rattling markets but the gridlock among policymakers will not move the rating agencies to downgrade the United States – yet.

The U.S. credit rating is far from safe. All three major agencies have negative outlooks on the United States, which suffered its first downgrade in history last year when Standard & Poor’s stripped it of its triple-A rating.

But the fiscal cliff is only one event in a series of issues that will see ratings agencies looming over Washington for months.

Investors sold off riskier assets such as stocks on Friday and scooped up safe-havens such as the dollar and U.S. Treasuries after Republican Representative John Boehner failed to find enough support from his own party to push a measure raising taxes on millionaires through the House of Representatives.

With Boehner’s leadership as speaker of the House on the line, markets worry he can’t get any tax plan through Congress at all – much less the stricter terms Obama wants in what’s becoming the latest drawn-out political budget debacle.
