Wyckoff NJ, It was a devastating and chaotic 24 hours for the North Jersey culinary community as two beloved Bergen County dining staples caught fire in separate, back-to-back incidents over the weekend.
Emergency crews in Wyckoff and Englewood Cliffs were kept on high alert between late Sunday, May 31, and early Monday, June 1, battling blazes that threatened to destroy two highly frequented local establishments.
Fortunately, fire officials have confirmed that no injuries were reported in either incident.
Incident 1: Ventilation System Ignites at The Brick House in Wyckoff
The first emergency call came in on Sunday evening, May 31, sending the Wyckoff Volunteer Fire Department to The Brick House restaurant located on Godwin Avenue.
Initially reported as an exterior brush fire against the rear of the building, the situation escalated rapidly. Upon arrival, initial fire crews confirmed that the flames had breached the building and extended directly into the restaurant’s air ventilation system.
-
The Scene: Firefighters faced a heavy, dense smoke condition that filled the basement area of the restaurant.
-
The Response: A working fire assignment was dispatched immediately.
-
The Outcome: Crews successfully tracked the fire down into the basement ductwork, extinguishing it before it could tear through the rest of the historic structure. Mutual aid partners assisted with venting the remaining heavy smoke from the property.
Incident 2: Early Morning Kitchen Blaze Strikes The Bicycle Club
Just hours later, at approximately 12:20 AM on Monday, June 1, a second commercial fire broke out miles away in Englewood Cliffs.
The Englewood Cliffs Fire Department rushed to The Bicycle Club at 487 Sylvan Avenue following an automated fire alarm and multiple reports of thick smoke pouring from the building. First responders arrived to discover a fully active, working fire originating in the restaurant’s second-floor kitchen.
While aggressive tactics knocked down the main body of the fire within 20 minutes, the flames had already extended into the building’s physical structure. Firefighters from a massive contingent of mutual aid towns—including Fort Lee, Englewood, Tenafly, Edgewater, Leonia, Cliffside Park, and Palisades Park—spent 90 minutes performing extensive overhaul operations to bring the scene completely under control.
Recovery Efforts and Community Support
Englewood Cliffs Mayor Mark Park met with the ownership of The Bicycle Club following the blaze, praising the rapid response of local volunteers for halting a much larger disaster.
Despite the structural and smoke damage, The Bicycle Club plans to remain open, though patrons should expect a temporarily reduced menu while recovery and kitchen repairs continue. Local officials are urging the community to rally around and support the local staple during this transition.
Both fires remain under active investigation, though authorities state that neither incident appears suspicious at this time.
