A battle is brewing in Bergen County over law enforcement salaries, with a police union claiming that its contract was violated when a controversial plan to combine the Sheriff’s Office and County Police was enacted.

The gambit, if successful, could lead to higher raises and back pay for its members.

At stake is a chunk of the $3 million that County Executive James Tedesco says has been saved thus far by folding the county force into the Sheriff’s Office last year.

At issue is a clause in the current agreement between PBA Local 49 and the county — a so-called “poison pill” — which calls for the contract to revert to earlier terms if the county police are merged into the Sheriff’s Office.

In recent weeks the union, which represents the former County Police, filed three grievances that were released following an Open Public Records request: one of them saying officers had been merged and earlier salary provisions should be activated.

The county says the grievance is without merit, maintaining that there has been a “realignment” of services. The former Bergen County Police Department now operates as the Bureau of Police Services under the Sheriff’s Office. Tedesco noted in a statement that the department remains “a distinct operating unit, which now reports to the Bergen County sheriff rather than the county executive.”

  1. Wait for it. The pension trolls will posting soon. They are just finishing up their golf game at the Ridgewood Country Club.

  2. 5:17 pm. I have my large bowl of popcorn and my adult beverage ready for the pension trolls comical but entertaining posts.

  3. Yes 5:17 I wonder what the golf score was today.

  4. over paid.

  5. yes miss fly on the wall in hall, we agree, you are overpaid.

  6. There are plenty of us in the work force, who are not in unions or on golf courses, that know police officers have it way too good. With salaries of $150000, they can afford their own retirement!

  7. how disappointing ….the pension trolls haven’t shown up yet

    : (

  8. That’s right 5:15…I just got off the golf course whilst you were collecting my garbage. And as usual your posting here bitching about how I am wealthy and you are nothing more than an uneducated dolt who thinks that the sweat off my brow should be used to pay your way along in this world. I did not bust my ass getting a great education and serving my country as a decorated officer in its military and then build a company from scratch so I can have a leach like you come round with your hand out. The difference between me and you is I earned it…the hard way. You just want what I have because your not man enough to get it yourself. And make sure you pick up my recyclables on Friday …bloody laborer.

  9. A real legend in your own mind.9:45. Your wealthily but worry and complain about how much people make. You served our country as as a decorated officer what were you rotc. Did you ever leave the country. Were ever in combat. What ribbons do you have Nation Defense and Good conduct everyone gets them Do you tell your buddies at the Ridgewood Country Club what a what a hero you were . Another Stole Valor candidate. Did you daddy know a senator to keep you out of trouble. Well I guess you can bullshit all you want because no one can verify your story. You did all these things but then how do you lower yourself to post on this blog. You know with us common people. You sound like a typical arrogant Ridgewood upper crust.

  10. Yesum Boss I be picking up your recyclables. Please don’t beat me Boss.

  11. You know 9:44 a lot off us served our country and went to war and came back and never said a thing about it. We never boast as you have that we were received decoration or what rank we were. We just came back and went to work if we could find it. You say that you we an officer. Well after reading you post I wonder what the enlisted men thought of you. You know the guys that were less educated. the guys that stood on the front lines with a weapon and held the line while officers like you were in the rear doing the important dangerous stuff. Im sure that you had such a command presence that thy would have taken a bullet for you. To brag about you military service and to use it as you did in your above post is a disgrace to the uniform that we all wore. I would rather work and fight next to those so called uneducated doll then take a command from you. In my eyes you sir are neither an officer or a gentleman. You are a disgrace to the uniform. That is if you ever wore one.

  12. “bloody laborer.” Are from England ? And “your not man enough to get it yourself” Wow must have had a poor game General or is it Admiral . See money can’t buy everything and certainly not a good golf score but I bet you cheat.

  13. 9:44 a Brit! But, I still think when you’re trying to say “you are”, its you’re. Not your. Congrats on that high priced education.

  14. Well, finally one of the pension trolls actually had the courage to show up. Nice to see you here Mr. Greedy PIG. For someone who claims to be highly educated you sure make a ton of stupid and false statements. I laugh at your statement

“you are nothing more than an uneducated dolt who thinks that the sweat off my brow should be used to pay your way along in this world.”

You think your so special that you shouldn’t have to pay others for the labor they provide to you and your family. Maybe it’s time you leave your Ivory Tower and learn what the real world is like, but I know you won’t.
    `
I seriously doubt you ever spent one minute serving your country, no less as a decorated Officer. That’s an obvious lie. You haven’t earned shit. You are one of the educated leaches that inherited what you have from your parents who actually worked and labored to GIVE you what you have and your living off of their legacy. Good thing mommy and daddy left you so much or else you would actually have to work for a living.

  15. “Stolen Valor” is a term applied to the phenomenon of people falsely claiming military awards or badges they did not earn, service they did not perform, Prisoner of War experiences that never happened, and other tales of military derring-do that exist only in their minds.

Some phonies, with zero military experience, create their stories from whole cloth.

Others, having served an honorable but peaceful stint in the military, choose to embellish their records and “spice up” an otherwise unremarkable career.

Yet others, who are legitimate combat veterans – some of whom were decorated for bravery – also embellish an already-impressive military resume.

The common thread is that these folks are lying in public about their military service. It’s nothing new – there are stories going back many centuries of people boasting of their war record, and sooner or later are found to be lying.

In the United States, thousands of cases have been documented in recent years in which judges, politicians, celebrities, veterans’ group officials, antiwar activists, other prominent persons and average citizens have been exposed for lying about their military record.

Some of them simply boast of their fictional exploits. Others take it a couple steps further and don military uniforms and awards. Others go so far as forging government documents they use as “proof” of their stories. In a recent case in Texas, a young man claiming a Marine career – complete with combat tours and decorations – used forged paperwork to join the Army as a sergeant, even bypassing basic training.

While the phenomenon is most closely associated in the U.S. with Vietnam-era military fakery, many cases have sprung up in recent years with the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq; likewise, several fraudulent claims by World War II and Korean War-era “veterans” also have been exposed.
