Maywood NJ, A local law enforcement team is getting national recognition! Maywood Police Sgt. Chris Nichols and his dedicated K-9 partner, Phoenyx, have been selected for the prestigious 2026 Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. fundraising calendar.
This recognition highlights the crucial role this Bergen County K-9 team plays in public safety while supporting a vital nonprofit mission: providing essential safety gear to working dogs nationwide.
Phoenyx: A Legacy of Service and Resilience
K-9 Phoenyx, a bloodhound, is more than just a calendar star; her story is one of legacy and resilience for the Maywood Police Department:
-
Joining the Force: Phoenyx joined the department in 2022 at just 9 weeks old.
-
Legacy: She was brought in shortly after the unexpected loss of the department’s previous bloodhound, Remi. Sergeant Nichols, a leading bloodhound trainer in New Jersey, saw her training as the best way to honor Remi’s memory.
-
The Name: Her name, Phoenyx, is derived from the Greek term for “rising from the ashes,” signifying her role in continuing the department’s bloodhound tradition. She is Remi’s niece, continuing the family line.
The Maywood Police Department was one of the first in the nation to pioneer the use of scent kits, a technique that significantly helps bloodhounds locate individuals who are lost or have wandered, particularly those with conditions like dementia or autism.
Supporting K-9 Heroes Nationwide
Phoenyx and Sgt. Nichols are featured alongside 11 other K-9 teams from across the U.S. that have been recipients of support from the calendar’s organizer, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc.
This nonprofit organization is dedicated to providing bullet and stab-protective vests—lifesaving equipment—to law enforcement dogs across the country.
Impact Data: Vested Interest in K9s has donated over 6,200 protective vests to K-9s in all 50 states, totaling a value of over $6.9 million.
All proceeds from the sale of the 2026 calendar will go directly toward providing equipment and services for law enforcement K-9s nationwide.
