Who was Steuben you ask? – some say second to Washington in the American Revolution. Visit the only house in America he owned. He restored the war-damaged Zabriskie Steuben House.

Who was Steuben you ask? – some say second to Washington in the American Revolution. Come find out more at a very interesting historic site.

In 1777, Baron von Steuben arrived in the American colonies to offer his services to the Continental Army, which was struggling with discipline and training. He presented himself to the Continental Congress with a letter of introduction from Benjamin Franklin.

Training of the Continental Army: Steuben was appointed as a Major General and Inspector General by General George Washington. His primary task was to train the Continental Army in the art of European-style warfare and instill discipline and order. He wrote a manual known as the “Regulations for the Order and Discipline of the Troops of the United States,” which became the standard training guide for the Continental Army.

Impact on the American Revolution: Baron von Steuben’s training and leadership had a profound impact on the Continental Army. His efforts helped transform it into a more professional and effective fighting force. His work was particularly instrumental in the success of the American forces at the Battle of Monmouth in 1778.
