One response from a previous Facebook post was that it was thrown off the bridge at that time.

The team spent several hours looking, beginning at 8 am. They used sonar and are eager to come back soon. The Divers from Northeast Public Safety & North Jersey Regional Scuba Taskforce report they did not find anything yet but are planning on returning in cooler weather and during a high tide on the Hackensack River. They are also working on fabricating probes to get into the silt deeper.
Other responses to their stolen c.1812 Cannon appeal asserted it was taken to a scrapyard to be melted down. We don’t know if these are cover stories and possibly sold to an unsuspecting museum after May 9, 1980. The cannon was located in front of the Steuben House for many years after it was removed from the Green in Hackensack and donated to Bergen County Historical Society.
Reminder, no metal fishing or metal detecting allowed at Historic New Bridge Landing.
May 1980…?
Might be time to move on.
Someone knows where it is just like Jimmy Hoffa
