River Edge Nj, the 1774 Campbell-Christie House is having some work done . The cedar shingle roof replacement phase started Monday. The house is owned by the County of Bergen and was moved onto the Bergen County Historical Society (non-profit) property in 1977 when threatened with demolition.

Originally the home was built by Jacob Campbell at the time of his marriage to Altche Westervelt in 1774. It suffered damage from the British side during the American Revolutionary War probably because three brothers, besides Jacob, were in the Bergen Militia.
This is the most common house type of the stone houses. You may have observed this unique-to-Bergen County architecture while traveling throughout the county.
Later owned by the Christie family. The mechanical genius J. Walter Christie was born in the house in 1865. He was an inventor of racing cars, fire engines and contributed to development of tanks used in WWII, and considered the “Father of the Modern tank.”
The home will be open for an October 22nd event featuring live bats in the barn. All 3 historic homes on the Bergen County Historical Society property will be open for tours, pumpkin picking and more!
