Judge Dressler’s life was defined by an unbreakable spirit, overcoming a devastating personal tragedy to dedicate his career to public service and compassionate leadership in the Surrogate’s Court.

A Life Defined by Resilience

The story of Michael Dressler is one of extraordinary determination, as recounted by Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco:

  • Tragic Accident: Just days before his high school graduation, a tragic accident at the Jersey Shore left him paralyzed. Doctors doubted he would survive the night.

  • Unstoppable Drive: Refusing to yield, Dressler went on to earn degrees from Bergen Community College, Fairleigh Dickinson University, and Seton Hall Law School, building a life of profound purpose.

  • Early Career: His career began in local government, serving as a councilman and later Mayor of Cresskill.

A Judge of Compassion and Innovation

Judge Dressler was first elected as Bergen County Surrogate Judge in 1996, holding the position for 29 years. His tenure was marked by fairness, accessibility, and critical innovations that became models across New Jersey.

  • Protecting the Elderly: He spearheaded the Guardianship Monitoring Program, creating a vital safeguard for the county’s frail and elderly residents.

  • Increasing Accessibility: He worked tirelessly to make the Surrogate’s Court more accessible, establishing satellite offices and creating practical resources for families dealing with complex legal matters.

County Executive Tedesco, who served alongside Dressler for 12 years, lauded his colleague’s character: “His legal expertise was unmatched, but what I will remember most is his kindness, his humor, and the way he always treated people with dignity.”

Remembering a Proud Heritage

Beyond his professional service, Judge Dressler was known for his strong values and deep pride in his Irish American heritage. He was a dedicated figure at the Bergen County St. Patrick’s Day Parade, embodying the spirit of community and perseverance he carried every day.

The Judge passed away at Holy Name Hospital, surrounded by his loving family, including his wife, Aggie, and closest friends. He leaves behind a profound legacy of strength and commitment that will never be forgotten by the people he served.
